Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601CL3 (08-00)
The Ambassadeur 4601CL3 (08-00) is a left-hand drive, high-speed round reel featuring a thumb-bar release and a classic centrifugal braking system. This specific model iteration requires precise lubrication to maintain its casting efficiency and cranking power. For professional-grade results, this service utilizes Deuthlon Reel Oil for speed components and Deuthlon Reel Grease for load-bearing surfaces.
Step 1: External Component Removal
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw, followed by the 10mm handle nut. Remove the handle arm, the curved spring washer, and the star drag wheel.
-
Accessing the Spool: Loosen the three knurled captive screws on the right side plate. Pull the right side plate away to release the spool.
-
Frame Separation: Unscrew the two internal screws on the left-side frame pillar to separate the gear-side plate from the aluminum frame.
Step 2: Cleaning and Degreasing
Before applying new lubricants, use a specialized reel cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to remove aged, thickened factory grease. Pay close attention to the teeth of the gears and the interior of the pinion yoke. Ensure all surfaces are bone-dry before proceeding with Deuthlon applications.
Step 3: Gear Train Lubrication
The drive train is the heart of the reel’s cranking power.
-
Main Gear: Apply a moderate coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the brass main gear. Ensure the grease is worked into the valleys of each tooth.
-
Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the exterior teeth of the pinion gear. This prevents galling during high-pressure retrieves.
-
Drag System: If the drag washers are carbon fiber, they may be left dry or given an ultra-thin film of grease for smoothness; however, the metal interface between the drive shaft and the gear should remain lightly greased.
Step 4: Levelwind and Idler System
The levelwind system is often the first part to fail due to debris.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply two to three drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil along the length of the worm shaft. Unlike grease, the oil will not trap as much sand or grit, ensuring the line guide moves fluidly.
-
Idler Gears: These plastic gears transfer motion from the spool to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gear teeth and the post on which they sit. This reduces the mechanical "drag" on the spool during a cast.
Step 5: Spool Bearings and Brake Drum
-
Bearings: Locate the spool bearings (one in the tension knob and one in the side plate). Clean them thoroughly and apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each.
-
Brake Drum: Wipe the inner copper or stainless steel brake drum with a dry swab. Do not grease this area, as the centrifugal blocks require friction to function.
Step 6: Reassembly and Function Check
-
Install the Pinion and Yoke: Ensure the pinion gear is seated correctly within the plastic yoke and that the yoke springs are upright.
-
Seat the Main Gear: Slide the main gear onto the drive shaft, followed by the drag stack.
-
Close the Reel: Secure the side plate to the frame. Insert the spool and reattach the right side plate.
-
Handle Reinstallation: Thread the star drag back on, followed by the spring washer, handle, and nut.
Check the thumb-bar engagement. When the reel is in "free spool," the levelwind should move effortlessly as you rotate the spool by hand. The use of Deuthlon lubricants ensures the 4601CL3 operates with a lower coefficient of friction and superior corrosion resistance.
