Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4600C USA Bass (89-0)

The Ambassadeur 4600C USA Bass (89-0) is one of the most iconic "themed" reels produced by Abu Garcia in Sweden. Released in 1989, this model was designed to celebrate American bass fishing, featuring a striking silver-grey finish and the red, white, and blue "USA Bass" shield.

Mechanically, the 89-0 revision is a robust, precision-engineered tool featuring a 5.3:1 gear ratio and a 2-bearing system. Because these reels are now cherished collectors' items that many still fish with today, proper lubrication is vital to protect the vintage brass and stainless steel internals. This guide utilizes Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil for a professional restoration of performance.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle Removal: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Lift off the handle arm, the curved spring washer, and the star drag wheel.

  2. Spring Washers: Beneath the star drag, you will find two Belleville spring washers. Note their orientation; they must be reinstalled back-to-back ( ) to provide the correct tension for the drag stack.

  3. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.

Note: Ensure the small plastic centrifugal brake weights on the spool spindle do not fall off and get lost during this step.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance

The 89-0 features high-grade brass gears that, after decades, may feel "notchy" if the original grease has dried out.

  1. Cleaning the Internals: Remove the internal screws securing the handle-side plate to the frame pillars. Lift the plate to reveal the main drive gear and pinion. Use a degreaser to strip away old, gummy lubricant.

  2. Grease Application: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease eliminates the "brass-on-brass" grinding feel common in vintage reels, providing a silent, powerful retrieve and protection against oxidation.

  3. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the contact points of the kick lever. This ensures the thumb-bar engagement remains crisp and doesn't stick—a common issue in older Ambassadeurs.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System

The 4600C features a synchronized levelwind. Because the line guide moves during the cast, any friction here acts as a parasitic brake, killing your casting distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap on the bottom of the line guide and remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out and clean the "double-helix" grooves of any trapped grit.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the white nylon idler gear on the frame. Ensure the teeth are clean and the gear rotates freely on its post.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Never use grease here. The ultra-low viscosity of Deuthlon oil allows these parts to oscillate with almost zero resistance, which is the secret to making this vintage reel cast like a modern one.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spindle

  1. Bearing Service: Locate the two stainless steel bearings—one in the side plate tension knob and one in the opposite side plate.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly with a solvent. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This oil is formulated to stay on the races at high RPMs, providing maximum spool speed and protection.

  3. Mechanical Anti-Reverse: The 89-0 model typically uses a mechanical anti-reverse "dog" (pawl). Clean the pawl and apply a tiny drop of oil to its pivot point to ensure it catches the ratchet gear reliably.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Set the Gear Box: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke and slide the main gear/drag stack back onto the drive shaft.

  2. Frame Closure: Align the side plate with the frame and tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the spindle seats properly in the pinion gear.

  4. Final Hardware: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.

Performance Verification

Depress the thumb bar to verify the reel enters free-spool mode effortlessly. Spin the spool; the line guide should track back and forth smoothly. Turn the handle to engage the gears. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears ensures your Ambassadeur 4600C USA Bass (89-0) remains a high-performance piece of history.
