Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4600C Bass (88-0)

The Ambassadeur 4600C Bass (88-0) is a classic "Made in Sweden" treasure. Released in 1988, this model was part of Abu Garcia’s push to refine the round reel for the competitive American bass market. It features the signature narrow spool for better ergonomics, a precision 5.3:1 gear ratio, and a high-quality 2-bearing system.

At nearly 40 years old, these reels often suffer from "sticky" clutches or "heavy" retrieves due to the evaporation of factory oils. To restore the legendary Swedish glide and protect the vintage brass internals, this guide utilizes Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle Removal: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Lift off the handle arm, the curved spring washer, and the star drag wheel.

  2. Spring Washers: Beneath the star drag, locate the two Belleville spring washers. Critical: They must be reinstalled back-to-back ( ) to act as a spring; installing them nested (( will result in a "binary" drag that is either fully on or fully off.

  3. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.

Note: Watch for the two small plastic centrifugal brake blocks on the spool spindle. If they fall off, the reel will become prone to backlashes.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance

The 88-0 revision utilizes a heavy-duty brass main gear. Over decades, old grease can trap moisture and cause oxidation (verdigris).

  1. Deep Cleaning: Remove the internal screws holding the right side plate to the pillars. Lift the plate to reveal the main gear and pinion. Use a degreaser and a toothbrush to remove all old, hardened lubricant from the gear teeth.

  2. Grease Application: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear and Pinion Gear. This grease is formulated to eliminate the "gritty" feel of aging brass, providing a buttery-smooth retrieve and a barrier against corrosion.

  3. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the contact points of the thumb-bar kick lever. This ensures the reel pops back into gear instantly when you turn the handle.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System

Because the 4600C has a synchronized levelwind, the line guide moves during the cast. This is the #1 area where vintage reels lose performance.

  1. Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap (bottom of the line guide) and remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out. Clean the double-helix grooves thoroughly.

  2. Idler Gear: Locate the white nylon gear on the frame. Ensure no sand or grit is trapped in the teeth.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Worm Shaft and Idler Gear. Do not use grease. Grease creates "windage" (drag) that slows down the spool during the cast. Deuthlon oil allows the levelwind to oscillate with virtually zero friction.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spindle

  1. Spool Bearings: Locate the two stainless steel bearings (one in the tension knob side, one in the opposite side plate).

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings in a solvent bath (like lighter fluid) until they spin freely and silently. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This high-speed oil allows the spool to reach peak RPMs for long-distance casting.

  3. Anti-Reverse Pawl: The 88-0 uses a mechanical "dog" or pawl. Wipe it clean and add a tiny drop of oil to the pivot post. Do not grease this part, or it may become too "lazy" to catch the ratchet gear.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Seat the Gears: Reinstall the pinion, yoke, and main gear stack.

  2. Close the Frame: Align the side plate and tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Reinstall Hardware: Place the star drag, washers, handle, and nut back on.

  4. The Spin Test: Depress the thumb-bar. The spool should spin freely for several seconds. If the line guide moves smoothly without "stuttering," the service is successful.

The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease for the power-train and Deuthlon Reel Oil for the casting-train ensures your Ambassadeur 4600C Bass (88-0) will continue to outlast modern plastic reels.
