Team Lew’s Custom Pro (TLC1000) Technical Repair Guide
The TLC1000 is the finesse specialist of the Custom Pro family. While it shares the "DNA" of its larger siblings (the 2000-4000), the 1000-series frame is significantly tighter. Precision is non-negotiable here; because the components are smaller, even a tiny amount of over-greasing or a slightly misaligned shim will be felt immediately through the handle.
1. The Finesse Teardown: Exterior
The TLC1000 uses a premium Carbon C40 Rotor to reduce startup inertia. This material is brittle compared to graphite; do not overtighten the rotor nut during reassembly.
-
Handle Removal: This is a screw-in handle. Remember that it threads directly into the zinc-alloy/aluminum drive gear. Avoid cross-threading at all costs.
-
The Spool & Drag: The 1000-size spool is shallow. Remove the drag retainer clip. You will find a single or triple-stack Carbon PTFE system. In this small size, these washers must be bone-dry or used with a micro-layer of specialized drag grease to prevent "stuttering" on light 4lb-test lines.
2. Accessing the Inner Frame
The TLC1000 uses a "hidden screw" architecture for a streamlined profile.
-
Rear Bumper: Remove the chrome/plastic protector at the base of the reel.
-
Side Plate Screws: There are three screws. Note that they may be of different lengths. Keep them mapped (e.g., "Top," "Bottom," "Rear") to ensure they go back in the same holes, as the frame is tapped specifically for them.
-
Sealing: Be mindful of the water-resistant gasket lining the side plate. If it has expanded or warped, do not force it back; use a tiny dab of grease to "tack" it into the groove before closing.
3. Gearbox & Drive Train (1000-Size Specifics)
The internal layout is compact. The primary difference in the 1000 is the Oscillation Slider clearance.
-
Main Gear: Inspect the teeth under magnification. The TLC1000 is often used for high-finesse techniques (like Ned rigs), so any tiny nick in the gear will feel like a "thump" every rotation.
-
The Main Shaft: The shaft is stainless steel. If the reel is dropped, this is the first part to bend. Roll it on a flat glass surface to check for straightness.
-
Lubrication Strategy: * Main Gear: Use a light, synthetic grease (e.g., Lucas Oil or Penn Precision). Apply with a small brush to the teeth only.
-
Worm Shaft/Slide Bar: Use Oil, not grease. In a 1000-size reel, grease on the slide bar creates too much resistance for ultra-finesse fishing.
-
4. Troubleshooting the TLC1000
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
| Handle Back-play | Loose Anti-Reverse Sleeve. | Clean the clutch bearing with alcohol. Ensure the sleeve is fully seated against the pinion. |
| "Clicking" on retrieve | Oscillation gear timing. | Ensure the pin on the oscillation gear is clean and the slider track is free of debris. |
| Stiff rotation | Over-tightened Side Plate. | Back off the side plate screws by 1/8th turn. These aluminum frames can "pinch" the bearings if torqued too hard. |
| Bail won't trip | Internal friction. | Remove the bail arm, clean the old grease, and apply a drop of light oil to the spring seat. |
5. Reassembly "Golden Rules"
-
Pinion Bearing Seat: The TLC1000 uses a Dual Bearing Support for the pinion. Ensure the top bearing is pressed flush into the frame before installing the rotor. If it’s tilted, you will feel a "grind" when the rotor spins.
-
Shim Management: If you find a tiny, hair-thin brass shim on the main gear axle, it must go back on the same side. This shim determines the gear mesh; moving it to the other side will likely strip the gears within a few hours of use.
-
Zero-Weight Oil: For the 1000 series, the 11+1 bearing system performs best with ultra-low viscosity oil. Anything heavier will make the reel feel like it's "working through mud."
Maintenance Warning
The TLC1000 is a "high-performance" machine. If you are fishing in sandy conditions or heavy silt, the line roller bearing (the most exposed part) should be oiled every 2-3 trips to maintain the silent retrieve this model is known for.
