Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s American Hero Camo (AHC1SHL)

The Lew’s American Hero Camo (AHC1SHL) is a rugged, left-handed workhorse built on a lightweight graphite frame. The "L" in the model name is the most important part of this guide—it means your disassembly rules are flipped.

This reel uses High Strength Solid Brass Speed Gears® and a Rulon Drag System. While it’s designed to be durable, the graphite frame and sideplates mean you have to be gentle with your screwdriver to avoid stripping the housing.

Phase 1: Left-Hand Specific Disassembly

Warning: Because the AHC1SHL is a Left-Hand (L) model, the threading on the handle nut is reversed. If you fight it the wrong way, you’ll strip the drive shaft before you even get inside.

  1. The Handle Nut: Remove the retainer screw. Turn the 10mm handle nut Clockwise to loosen. Pull off the 95mm aluminum handle and the star drag.

  2. Star Drag Components: Keep track of the Belleville Washers (the two bowed spring washers). For the drag to function correctly, they must be reinstalled in an opposing orientation ().

  3. Spool Access: Locate the side plate release pin on the bottom of the palm-side plate. Rotate the plate and remove it. Slide out the Anodized Aluminum U-spool.

Phase 2: The Magnetic Control System (MCS)

The American Hero Camo uses an Externally Adjustable Magnetic Control System. Unlike the centrifugal brakes on the Custom series, these are virtually maintenance-free but still need cleaning.

  • The Magnets: Wipe the internal magnetic bank inside the side plate with a dry cotton swab. Do not apply grease or oil to the magnets; it creates a "sticky" field that will kill your casting distance.

  • The Spool Rim: Wipe the flat outer rim of the aluminum spool. This is where the magnets create their braking force. Any oil on this surface will make the brakes feel "mushy."

Phase 3: Interior Brass Gears & Rulon Drag

  1. Opening the Gear Box: Remove the three side plate screws.

    • Graphite Caution: You are threading metal screws into a graphite composite. Use a hand screwdriver and stop the moment it feels snug. Never over-tighten, or the housing will crack.

  2. Brass Speed Gears: You will find solid brass gears cut on Hamai CNC machines.

    • Cleaning: Scrub the teeth with a toothbrush and alcohol until they shine. Brass is heavy-duty but collects "black gunk" (metal wear) quickly.

    • Greasing: Apply a thin, consistent layer of synthetic grease.

  3. Rulon Drag Washers: This reel provides up to 15 lbs of drag.

    • The Rule: Rulon is a self-lubricating material. It performs best when dry and clean. Adding grease here will actually reduce your stopping power. Wipe them with a dry cloth only.

Phase 4: Lubrication for the 6-Bearing System

  1. Spool Bearings: Locate the two main casting bearings (one in the side plate, one under the tension knob). Apply one drop of thin high-speed oil to each.

  2. Worm Gear (Level Wind): Clean the Zirconia line guide and the worm gear. Apply a very light coat of oil or a tiny dab of grease. Because this is a graphite-frame reel, keeping the level wind clean is vital to prevent "frame flex" friction.

  3. Zero-Reverse Clutch: The one-way roller bearing in the side plate handles your anti-reverse. Keep it clean and dry. If it starts slipping, one drop of oil is okay, but never grease it.

AHC1SHL Troubleshooting & Specs

Feature Specification Maintenance Note
Gear Ratio 7.1:1 (High Speed) Check pinion gear mesh for smoothness.
Max Drag 15 lbs (Rulon) Keep washers dry; do not grease.
Frame One-piece Graphite Do not over-tighten side plate screws.
Brakes Magnetic (MCS) Clean magnets with a dry swab only.

Common Issues:

  • Handle Slipping: This usually means the Zero-Reverse bearing is over-lubricated. Flush it with alcohol and leave it mostly dry.

  • Screeching during Cast: This is usually a dry spool bearing. A single drop of oil in the tension knob bearing will usually silence it.

  • Thumb Bar Sticks: Apply a tiny dab of grease to the Clutch Bar sliding tracks inside the frame.

Pro Tip: Because of the camo finish, be careful with harsh "Aerosol" reel cleaners. They can sometimes dull the camo pattern on the graphite sideplates. Stick to 90% Isopropyl alcohol on a swab for the internals.
