The Hardy Ultralite MA DD (Mid-Arbor Disc Drag) series is a precision instrument designed for high performance. Whether you are dealing with a gritty drag, a silent clicker, or general salt buildup, this guide covers the teardown and maintenance for both the 8000 and 10000 models.

Required Tools and Materials

Before beginning, ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace. Using a magnetic parts tray is highly recommended to prevent losing small springs or screws.

  • Precision Screwdriver Set: Specifically small flathead and Phillips heads.

  • Hex Key / Allen Wrench: Usually 1.5mm or 2mm for the handle or drag knob.

  • Cleaning Agent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel cleaner.

  • Lubricants: High-quality synthetic reel grease and lightweight reel oil.

  • Soft Brush: A toothbrush works perfectly for scrubbing threads.

  • Microfiber Cloth: For wiping down polished surfaces.

Step 1: Spool Removal and Basic Inspection

  1. Release the Spool: Locate the central release cap on the front of the spool. Depress the lever or unscrew the captive nut (depending on the specific production year) and pull the spool straight off the frame.

  2. Initial Clean: Use a cloth to wipe away any standing water or visible debris from the spindle and the interior of the frame.

  3. Check the O-Rings: Inspect the rubber O-rings on the spindle for cracks or dry rot. If they are brittle, they must be replaced to maintain the seal.

Step 2: Drag System Maintenance

The MA DD utilizes a color-coded 360-degree drag system. If the drag feels "choppy," it is likely due to salt crystallization or old grease.

  1. Access the Drag Stack: On the back of the frame, remove the small retention screws holding the drag housing in place.

  2. Disassemble the Washers: Carefully remove the carbon fiber and stainless steel discs. Note the exact order of removal. 3. Cleaning the Discs: Wipe carbon discs with a dry cloth. Do not soak them in solvent. Use isopropyl alcohol on the stainless steel discs to remove oxidized grease.

  3. Regrease: Apply a very thin, translucent layer of specialized drag grease (like Cal’s) to the metal washers. The carbon discs should remain relatively dry unless specified by a custom kit.

  4. Reinstall: Place the washers back into the housing in the original sequence.

Step 3: Servicing the Drive Gear and Bearings

  1. The One-Way Bearing: This is the "clutch" that allows the reel to spin freely in one direction and engage the drag in the other.

    • Remove the bearing from the spindle housing.

    • If the reel is slipping, the bearing may be over-lubricated. Clean it entirely with alcohol.

    • Apply one drop of thin oil. Never use heavy grease here, as it can cause the "dogs" in the bearing to stick, resulting in a total drag failure.

  2. The Main Shaft: Apply a small amount of synthetic grease to the base of the spindle where it meets the frame.

Step 4: Clicker and Handle Maintenance

If your reel has gone silent or the handle feels stiff:

  • Handle: Use a hex key to remove the handle screw. Clean the post and apply a drop of oil. Reassemble.

  • Clicker Mechanism: Inspect the small plastic or metal "tongue" inside the spool or frame. If it is bent, gently realign it with needle-nose pliers. If the spring is broken, it will require a specific Hardy replacement part.

Troubleshooting Guide

Issue Likely Cause Solution
Gritty feeling when cranking Sand in the drive gear Deep clean frame and spindle with a brush.
Drag won't tighten Compressed/Worn washers Replace the carbon fiber disc stack.
Slipping in cold weather Thick grease in the clutch Clean one-way bearing; use light oil only.
Spool wobble Loose spindle nut Tighten the main spindle retention screw.

Reassembly and Testing

  1. Slide the spool back onto the frame. You should hear a distinct click when it seats properly.

  2. Tighten the drag to maximum. Pull some line off to ensure the stack is compressed and seating evenly.

  3. Back the drag off to zero. Ensure the spool spins freely without rubbing against the frame.

  4. Check the direction. Ensure the drag engages in the correct direction (Left-Hand or Right-Hand Retrieve). To flip the retrieve, you must remove and invert the one-way clutch bearing.

Pro Tip: Always store your Hardy Ultralite MA DD with the drag backed off completely. Leaving the drag tightened for long periods can compress the washers and lead to "flat spots" in the drag tension.
