This guide covers the maintenance and repair of the Hardy Ultralight CA DD (Conical Arbor Disc Drag) series, ranging from the 3000 to the 7000 models. These reels are known for their lightweight construction and the 360-degree color-coded drag system.

Required Tools and Materials

Before beginning, ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace. Use a magnetic tray to keep track of small components.

Item Purpose
Small Flathead Screwdriver Removing the drag housing screws
Isopropyl Alcohol (90%+) Cleaning old grease and debris
Synthetic Reel Grease Lubricating the spindle and main gear
Light Reel Oil Lubricating the handle and one-way bearing
Soft Toothbrush Scrubbing grit from the frame and spool
Microfiber Cloth Wiping down finished surfaces

1. Routine Cleaning and Spool Removal

The CA DD features a captive nut system, meaning the spool release nut stays attached to the spool to prevent loss in the field.

  1. Remove the Spool: Rotate the center captive nut counter-clockwise until the spool releases from the frame.

  2. Rinse: If the reel has been used in brackish or saltwater, rinse the frame and spool thoroughly in lukewarm fresh water.

  3. Dry: Pat dry with a microfiber cloth. Do not use compressed air, as this can force grit deeper into the drag housing.

2. Drag System Maintenance

The CA DD uses a sealed carbon fiber disc drag. While the discs themselves are designed to run dry, the surrounding mechanical parts require periodic attention.

Accessing the Drag

  1. Locate the drag knob on the back of the frame.

  2. In most models, the drag assembly is held by a retaining ring or a series of small screws. Carefully remove these to lift the drag housing out.

  3. Inspection: Check the carbon fiber washers for glazing (a shiny, smooth appearance) or cracking.

Cleaning the Clicker

If the "click" of your reel has become muted or gritty:

  1. Clean the clicker track (the notched ring inside the spool) using a toothbrush and alcohol.

  2. Apply a tiny drop of light oil to the clicker pawl. Do not over-grease, as this will dampen the sound.

3. Addressing Common Issues

Issue: Drag Slippage or Inconsistent Tension

  • Cause: Oil or grease has migrated onto the carbon fiber discs.

  • Fix: Disassemble the drag stack. Clean the carbon discs and the mating stainless steel plates with isopropyl alcohol until no residue remains. Reassemble dry.

Issue: Gritty Rotation

  • Cause: Salt buildup or sand in the spindle housing.

  • Fix: Remove the spool. Wipe the spindle (the central shaft) clean. Apply a thin layer of synthetic grease to the spindle and the internal bore of the spool.

Issue: Handle Stiffness

  • Cause: Debris behind the handle assembly.

  • Fix: Some CA DD models allow for handle removal via a screw on the underside of the handle arm. Remove, clean the bushing, and apply one drop of light oil.

4. Converting Retrieve Direction (Left to Right Hand)

The Hardy Ultralight CA DD utilizes a one-way needle bearing to control retrieve direction.

  1. Remove the spool from the frame.

  2. Remove the bearing cover/housing located on the central spindle (usually held by a threaded cap or small screws).

  3. Slide the one-way bearing off the spindle.

  4. Flip the bearing over and slide it back onto the spindle.

  5. Reinstall the bearing cover.

  6. Test the retrieve. The reel should now "click" in the opposite direction and provide drag resistance in the new direction.

5. Reassembly and Final Check

  1. Seat the Spool: Align the spool with the spindle and ensure it seats fully against the frame.

  2. Tighten the Captive Nut: Ensure it is snug but do not over-torque.

  3. Function Test:

    • Set the drag to the minimum setting and pull line; it should be smooth.

    • Set the drag to the maximum (Red zone on the 360 knob) and ensure the resistance increases significantly.

    • Check for any "wobble" between the spool and frame.

Note on Maintenance: Hardy recommends a full teardown and cleaning at the end of every season. If you frequently fish in saltwater, a freshwater soak after every trip is mandatory to preserve the anodized finish and internal seals.
