Hardy Duchess 2.75: Repair and Maintenance Guide

The Hardy Duchess 2.75 is a high-precision, traditional click-and-pawl fly reel. While it is built by Alnwick craftsmen to be incredibly durable, its mechanical simplicity means that when issues do arise, they are usually related to wear on moving parts or lack of lubrication.

Common Repair Issues & Troubleshooting

The most frequent issues with the Duchess series involve the click-check mechanism and the spool latch.

Issue Likely Cause Solution
Weak or "Mushy" Click Fatigued or bent check springs. Replace the check springs (Item #1332720).
Irregular Drag Tension Worn pawls or debris in the gear teeth. Clean the gear with a toothbrush; flip or replace pawls.
Spool Wobble Lack of lubrication on the spindle or grit buildup. Clean spindle thoroughly and apply fresh reel grease.
Spool Releasing Unexpectedly Weakened latch spring or grit in the latch bar. Deep clean the latch mechanism; replace latch spring if needed.
Gritty Winding Sand or dried salt in the internal mechanism. Perform a full breakdown and kerosene/vinegar soak.

Critical Maintenance Procedures

1. Adjusting the Click-Check

The Duchess features a dual-pawl system. To maintain even wear, you can switch between the left and right pawls.

  • Note: Unlike larger models, the 2.75" (2¾") Duchess does not have an external regulator knob for tension adjustment; tension is fixed based on the spring strength and pawl engagement.

2. Converting Retrieve (RHW to LHW)

The reel is often set for Left Hand Wind (LHW) out of the box.

  1. Remove the spool by sliding the latch bar.

  2. Disengage the active pawl by turning it away from the gear.

  3. Engage the opposite pawl so it contacts the gear teeth.

  4. Ensure the pawl "point" is angled correctly for the desired direction.

3. Lubrication Points

  • Main Spindle: Use a high-quality reel grease (like Hardy's own or a synthetic substitute). Avoid over-greasing, as it attracts grit.

  • Pawl Posts: A single drop of light machine oil (3-in-1 or similar) on the post where the pawl pivots.

  • Handle: If the wood handle feels sticky, apply a drop of light oil to the base of the handle post.

Replacement Parts List

For the Duchess 2.75, keep these specific Hardy part numbers on hand for DIY repairs:

  • Check Spring: #1332720 (Spring Steel)

  • Click Pawl: #1333869 (Small)

  • Latch Spring: #1332839 (Phosphor Bronze)

  • Spindle Nut Cover: #1334356 (Standard locking screw)

Pro Tip: Always store your Duchess with the clicker disengaged (if possible) or at the lowest tension to prevent the springs from "setting" or losing their temper over long periods of inactivity.
