Hardy Baby Bouglé Heritage Repair and Maintenance Guide
The Hardy Baby Bouglé Heritage is a precision-engineered, 2 1/4 inch fly reel that celebrates traditional craftsmanship. Due to its small scale and fine tolerances, maintenance requires a steady hand and a minimalist approach to lubrication.
Tools and Materials Needed
-
Small flat-head screwdriver (precision/jeweler's size)
-
Soft lint-free cloth or microfiber towel
-
Isopropyl alcohol or mild soapy water
-
High-quality reel oil (e.g., Hardy Reel Oil or sewing machine oil)
-
Light synthetic grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Cal's)
-
Cotton swabs
Phase 1: Disassembly
-
Remove the Spool: Locate the small knurled spindle screw on the face of the spool. Unscrew it counter-clockwise. Pull the spool straight off the frame. Note that on the Baby model, these parts are very light; handle with care to avoid dropping them.
-
Inspect the Internals: Once the spool is removed, the click-check mechanism (the "guts") is exposed. The Baby Bouglé typically features a symmetrical rim-pressure check.
-
Spring and Pawl Removal: If the clicker feels weak or has stopped, use your screwdriver to carefully remove the screw holding the pawl (the small triangular metal piece). Be mindful of the spring tension so parts do not fly out.
Phase 2: Cleaning
-
Debris Removal: Use a dry cotton swab to remove old, darkened grease and grit from the gear teeth on the back of the spool and the frame's inner race.
-
Deep Clean: If the reel has been exposed to salt or heavy dirt, wipe all metal surfaces with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
-
Dry Thoroughly: Ensure no moisture remains in the spindle housing or under the springs, as this can lead to corrosion over time.
Phase 3: Common Repairs and Adjustments
Weak Click or Overrun
If the reel is "free-spooling" too easily, the springs may have lost tension.
-
The Fix: Gently remove the spring and slightly widen the gap of the "V" shape to increase tension. Reinstall and test. If the spring is snapped, it must be replaced with a genuine Hardy Heritage spring.
Grittiness During Rotation
This is usually caused by particles trapped in the spindle bushing.
-
The Fix: Clean the spindle (the central post) and the hole in the spool thoroughly. Do not use abrasive pads.
Left-Hand to Right-Hand Wind Conversion
The Baby Bouglé is usually set for Right-Hand Wind (RHW) out of the box.
-
Engage the pawl that faces the direction of the incoming line.
-
Disengage the opposite pawl by turning it away from the gear.
-
Ensure the spring tension is balanced for the preferred direction.
Phase 4: Lubrication and Reassembly
Proper lubrication is "less is more." Excessive grease will collect grit and slow the reel down.
-
Spindle: Apply one drop of oil to the main spindle post.
-
Gear Teeth: Apply a very thin film of grease to the teeth on the spool using a cotton swab.
-
Pawls: Apply a tiny dab of grease where the pawl contacts the gear and where the spring contacts the pawl.
-
Reassemble: Slide the spool back onto the frame, ensuring the gears mesh. Replace the spindle screw and tighten until finger-snug.
Maintenance Tips
-
Storage: Always back off the tension regulator (if applicable) and dry the reel completely before storing it in its leather case.
-
Avoid Submergence: This is a traditional click-and-pawl reel, not a sealed disc-drag system. If it goes underwater, it requires a full strip and dry-out immediately.
