Hardy Baby Bougle Heritage 23 00
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Baby Bouglé Heritage is a precision-engineered piece of tackle, celebrated for its vintage aesthetics and classic click-check mechanism. Because it is a "Heritage" model, it utilizes a traditional design that is relatively simple to service but requires a delicate touch to avoid marring the finish or stripping the fine-threaded screws.
Pre-Repair Essentials
Before you begin, ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace. Using a magnetic parts tray is highly recommended to prevent losing the small bridge screws.
Required Tools:
-
Small precision flat-head screwdriver (ensure it fits the screw slot perfectly to avoid "burring").
-
Isopropyl alcohol or a mild degreaser.
-
Cotton swabs and a lint-free cloth.
-
High-quality reel grease (e.g., Hardy Reel Grease or Cal’s).
-
Light reel oil (e.g., Lucus Reel Oil).
Step 1: Disassembly
-
Remove the Spool: Depress the latch needle or lever on the front of the spool and pull the spool straight off the spindle.
-
Access the Internal Works: The Baby Bouglé features a "bridge" that holds the check mechanism. Use your precision screwdriver to remove the two small screws securing the bridge to the frame.
-
Remove the Components: Carefully lift the bridge, the springs, and the pawls. Note the orientation of the pawls; they are symmetrical, but their position determines whether the reel is set for Left-Hand Wind (LHW) or Right-Hand Wind (RHW).
Step 2: Cleaning and Inspection
Old grease can oxidize and "gum up," which dampens the classic Hardy click.
-
Degrease: Submerge the metal pawls and springs in isopropyl alcohol to remove old gunk. Use a cotton swab to clean the spindle and the teeth of the gear on the spool.
-
Inspect for Wear: Check the tips of the pawls. If the click sounds uneven, the pawl tip may be worn down. Since this is a dual-pawl system, you can often swap the "active" pawl with the "reserve" pawl if one is fresher.
-
Check the Springs: Ensure the springs have not lost their tension. They should feel snappy, not soft.
Step 3: Lubrication
Less is more. Over-greasing will attract grit and mute the reel's signature sound.
-
The Spindle: Apply one drop of light oil to the main spindle.
-
The Check Mechanism: Apply a very small amount of grease to the tips of the pawls where they contact the gear.
-
The Springs: Apply a thin film of oil to the springs to prevent corrosion.
-
The Latch: Put a tiny drop of oil on the spool latch mechanism to ensure smooth engagement.
Step 4: Reassembly and Direction Adjustment
The Baby Bouglé is reversible. To set the wind direction:
-
Right-Hand Wind (RHW): Engage the pawl on the right side so its tip sits in the gear teeth; disengage the left pawl by turning it away from the center.
-
Left-Hand Wind (LHW): Engage the pawl on the left side and disengage the right.
Final Steps:
-
Place the bridge back over the springs and pawls.
-
Reinstall the bridge screws. Do not overtighten; snug is sufficient.
-
Slide the spool back onto the spindle until the latch clicks into place.
-
Rotate the handle to ensure the "click" is crisp and the resistance is even.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Muted or "Mushy" Click | Excess grease or dirt | Clean components and use lighter lubrication. |
| Spool Wobble | Loose spindle screw or wear | Check the screw at the back of the frame; ensure it is tight. |
| Gritty Rotation | Sand/Dirt in the gear | Deep clean the spool gear teeth with a soft toothbrush. |
| Handle Stiffness | Dry spindle | Apply a single drop of light oil to the spindle base. |
