Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4500C (76-12-00)

The Ambassadeur 4500C (76-12-00) is a legendary "Made in Sweden" classic from December 1976. This model represents the golden era of Abu Garcia engineering, featuring a narrow-spool design that made it the premier choice for precision bass and freshwater angling. It is characterized by its high-speed 5.3:1 gear ratio, stainless steel ball bearings, and the classic "Big A" silver or grey finish.

Restoring a reel from 1976 requires a balance of cleaning and high-performance lubrication to protect the nearly 50-year-old brass and steel components. To restore its signature Swedish glide, this guide utilizes Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Lift off the handle, the handle spacer, and the star drag wheel.

  2. Spring Washers: Beneath the star drag, you will find two Belleville spring washers. Crucial: These must be reinstalled back-to-back ( ) to provide a smooth, progressive drag curve. If they are nested ((, the drag will lose its adjustability.

  3. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.

    • Note: The 76-12 model uses two small black or white plastic centrifugal brake weights on the spool spindle. Be careful not to lose these as they are essential for casting control.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance

The 76-12-00 features heavy-duty, precision-cut brass gears. Over five decades, old grease often turns into a waxy substance that causes a "heavy" feel during the retrieve.

  1. Internal Access: Remove the internal screws securing the handle-side plate to the frame pillars. Lift the plate to reveal the main drive gear and pinion assembly.

  2. Deep Cleaning: Use a degreaser and a soft brush to remove every trace of old, hardened lubricant and any "verdigris" (green oxidation) on the brass.

  3. Grease Application: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is specifically engineered to eliminate the "gritty" feel common in vintage brass, providing a silent, powerful retrieve and a long-lasting protective barrier.

  4. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the contact points of the kick lever to ensure the thumb-bar engagement remains crisp.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System

Because the levelwind on the 4500C is synchronized (moves during the cast), this is where most casting distance is lost due to friction.

  1. Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap on the bottom of the line guide and remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out and clean the "double-helix" grooves.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the white nylon idler gear (cog wheel) on the frame. Ensure the teeth are clean and it rotates freely on its post.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Never use grease here. Grease creates mechanical drag that significantly slows the spool. Deuthlon oil allows the levelwind to move with almost zero resistance.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spindle

  1. Bearing Service: Locate the two stainless steel spool bearings. In 1976 models, these were built to last a lifetime if maintained.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly in a solvent (like lighter fluid) until they spin freely and silently. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This maintains the ultra-low start-up inertia required for casting light lures while protecting the vintage steel.

  3. Mechanical Anti-Reverse: The 76-12 model uses a mechanical anti-reverse "dog." Clean the pawl and apply a tiny drop of oil to its pivot point. Do not grease, as grease can cause the pawl to stick in the "open" position, leading to handle back-slap.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Set the Gear Box: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke and slide the main gear/drag stack back onto the drive shaft.

  2. Close the Frame: Align the side plate with the frame and tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the spindle seats properly in the pinion gear.

  4. Final Hardware: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.

Performance Verification

Depress the thumb bar to verify free-spool. Spin the spool; the line guide should track back and forth smoothly across the frame. Turn the handle to engage the gears. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the power-train and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the casting-train ensures your classic Ambassadeur 4500C (76-12-00) performs with its original Swedish excellence.
