Ambassadeur 4500
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4500 is the definitive "narrow spool" round reel from the Swedish factory. While the 5000 and 5500 series are the standard full-size models, the 4500 was designed specifically for anglers who wanted the power of a round reel but in a more compact, ergonomic, and lightweight package.
Because "4500" covers several decades of production, your specific model's performance and maintenance needs depend on the suffix (C, CS, CB, etc.).
The Evolution of the 4500 Platform
| Model | Notable Characteristics | Best Use Case |
| Ambassadeur 4500 (Classic) | Bronze bushings, often red or silver. No bearings. | Heavy-duty durability, trolling, or close-quarters lure work. |
| Ambassadeur 4500C | The "C" denotes Stainless Steel Ball Bearings. High-speed 5.3:1 ratio. | Precision casting for bass, trout, and light-medium lures. |
| Ambassadeur 4500CB | Features a Self-Centering levelwind system. | Accuracy-focused casting and vintage collection. |
| Ambassadeur 4500CS Rocket | Modern revision with upgraded bearings and high-speed retrieve. | Max distance casting (Surf or open water). |
| Ambassadeur 4500AL | Aluminum frame and side plates for weight reduction. | All-day comfort and power fishing. |
Core Engineering Features
-
Synchronized Levelwind: On almost all 4500 models, the line guide moves back and forth during the cast. This improves line lay but requires thin, high-speed lubrication to prevent friction.
-
Centrifugal Braking: Most utilize a 2-pin or 6-pin plastic block system on the spool spindle. These are highly reliable but must be kept clean and dry.
-
Multi-Disc Drag: Older models use felt or leather; 1990s and newer models typically feature Carbon Matrix washers for a much higher, smoother drag ceiling.
Maintenance & "Super-Tuning" Guide
To get the best performance out of a 4500, especially the vintage Swedish models, follow these lubrication protocols:
1. The Power Train (Grease)
The main gear and pinion in these reels are usually heavy-duty brass.
-
Action: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the gear teeth.
-
Benefit: Vintage brass can feel "notchy." This high-tenacity grease provides a silent mesh and protects the metal from oxidation (verdigris).
2. The Casting Train (Oil)
Because the levelwind is synchronized, the worm shaft and idler gear are under load during the cast.
-
Action: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft, Idler Cog, and Spool Bearings.
-
Benefit: Do not use grease here. Grease creates "windage" (drag). A high-speed oil allows the levelwind to oscillate with zero resistance, which is the secret to making a 4500 cast as far as a modern low-profile reel.
3. The Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR)
If your model was made after roughly 1992, it likely has a roller bearing in the side plate instead of a mechanical dog.
-
Warning: Never grease the IAR bearing. This will cause the handle to slip. Use a tiny amount of very thin oil or leave it dry after cleaning with alcohol.
Identifying Your Reel
If you are looking for parts or a specific schematic, check the Reel Foot (the part that attaches to the rod). You will find a stamped number (e.g., 86-0 or 04-00).
-
The first two digits are the Year of Production.
-
The second two digits are the Revision Number.
