Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2600 & 2650 (1969)

The 1969 Ambassadeur 2600 and 2650 are iconic "early-era" performance reels. These models were among the first to experiment with high-speed retrieves (at the time, a 3.5:1 or 4.5:1 ratio) and narrower spool dimensions compared to the standard 5000 series.

Reels from 1969 utilize vintage metallurgy that is prone to "brass-rounding" if operated dry. To maintain their value and performance, they require high-film-strength lubricants that can cushion old gear teeth.

Tools and Supplies

  • Screwdrivers: Precision flathead (use a wide, thin blade to prevent slipping and "burring" the vintage screw heads).

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel cleaner.

  • Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.

  • Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).

  • Parts Tray: To keep the specific 1960s-era brass shims and clips organized.

1. Disassembly and Frame Inspection

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the locking screw, handle nut, and handle. Take note of the orientation of the two copper spring washers under the star drag.

  2. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled screws. Carefully pull the side plate away. In the 1969 models, the anti-reverse dog is mechanical; ensure it does not fall out of the assembly during removal.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out. Check the spool shaft for "scoring" (horizontal scratches). If found, these must be polished out with 2000-grit sandpaper before reassembly.

2. Deep Cleaning the 1960s Internals

After 50+ years, original lubricants have likely turned into a hard, shellac-like substance.

  • The Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. The 1969 models often used white asbestos or leather drag washers. If they are in good shape, wipe them clean. If they are crumbling, replace them with modern carbon fiber washers.

  • Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and the pawl. Inspect the "teeth" of the worm gear; if they are sharp or jagged, the reel will feel "crunchy" during the retrieve.

  • Spool Bushings: Many 1969 models utilized brass bushings rather than ball bearings. These must be cleaned until the inner bore is perfectly bright.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Using modern synthetic lubricants on a 1969 reel provides a significant performance upgrade over the original mineral-based oils.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main Gear & Pinion: Use a brush to apply a thin, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to every tooth. This grease is specifically engineered to "cling" to the brass, providing a silent, buttery-smooth retrieve that masks the vibration of older gears.

  • Anti-Reverse Mechanism: Apply a tiny dab to the anti-reverse dog and its spring. This ensures the mechanical lock engages instantly without the "sticking" common in vintage models.

  • Yoke and Sliding Plates: Apply grease to all metal-on-metal sliding surfaces in the clutch mechanism.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Support (Bushings or Bearings): Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bushing or bearing. This oil creates a micro-film that drastically reduces friction, allowing the relatively heavy 1960s spool to spin with much less effort.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Deuthlon Cast Lube is dust-resistant, which prevents the level wind from turning into a "grinding paste" when fishing in sandy or dusty environments.

  • Drive Shaft: Place one drop at the base of the drive shaft to ensure smooth rotation under the pressure of a hooked fish.

4. Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly before tightening the cap.

  2. Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the drag washers are seated flat.

  3. Frame Integration: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake blocks are seated on the pins.

  4. Side Plate: Align the side plate and secure the three thumb screws. Ensure the mechanical anti-reverse "clicks" when you turn the handle backward.

  5. Final Tensioning: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the spool has just a "micro-thump" of side-to-side play.

Technical Performance Note

The 1969 Ambassadeur 2600/2650 is a masterpiece of mid-century engineering. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease, you are effectively "filling in" microscopic wear on the vintage brass gears, which restores the reel to its original factory feel. Regular maintenance with Deuthlon Cast Lube will ensure that this collector's item remains a fully capable fishing tool for another 50 years.
