Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500 (Pre-1975)
The Ambassadeur 2500 produced before 1975 is a cornerstone of "Old School" Swedish engineering. This vintage model differs from the more common 2500C by utilizing high-grade bronze bushings instead of ball bearings. In the early 1970s, these reels were designed to be indestructible workhorses, but they require a specific approach to lubrication to ensure the spool remains responsive for modern fishing applications.
Since these components have likely seen over 50 years of service, the focus of this repair is on deep cleaning and the application of high-film-strength synthetics to restore the "factory-smooth" feel.
Tools and Lubrication Kit
-
Screwdrivers: Fine-blade flathead (essential for protecting the vintage screw heads).
-
Cleaning Basin: Isopropyl alcohol or a specialized reel degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
-
Soft Brush: To clean the gear teeth and level wind grooves.
1. External Teardown
-
Handle Removal: Unscrew the handle nut retainer screw, followed by the 10mm handle nut. Remove the handle and the star drag. Take note of the orientation of the copper tension washers (curved shims) underneath.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the handle-side plate away from the frame.
-
Spool and Bushings: Slide the spool assembly out. In the pre-1975 2500, the bronze bushings are typically located inside the tension caps on the side plates. Inspect these bushings for "green" oxidation (verdigris).
2. Internal Mechanical Overhaul
The pre-1975 models feature a classic mechanical anti-reverse dog that provides the characteristic "clicking" sound when the handle is turned.
-
Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Vintage reels from this era often contain leather or early composite drag washers. Unless they are crumbling, clean them with a dry cloth. If they are saturated with old, rancid oil, consider replacing them with modern carbon fiber washers.
-
The Drive Shaft: Clean the drive shaft and the ratchet wheel. Ensure the base of the shaft is free of old, hardened grease.
-
Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and the pawl. The level wind on the 2500 is "non-disengaging," meaning it moves during the cast. This area must be surgically clean to prevent it from acting as a brake on your spool.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
For a bushing-based reel, the quality of the oil is more important than in a bearing-based reel, as the oil must form a physical barrier between the spool shaft and the stationary bronze.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main & Pinion Gear: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the gear teeth. This grease is formulated to resist "spin-off," ensuring the gear teeth remain cushioned and silent during the retrieve.
-
Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a small dab to the dog and the ratchet. This prevents the mechanical parts from wearing down and quiets the action.
-
Clutch Linkage: Grease the sliding surfaces of the yoke and the engagement lever.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Bronze Bushings (Critical): Place two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil into each bushing. This oil's high-speed film strength is vital here; it prevents the "squeal" and heat buildup that can occur with standard mineral oils during high-speed casts.
-
Spool Shaft: Apply a light film of oil along the length of the spool shaft.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Using Deuthlon Cast Lube on the level wind instead of grease is a major performance upgrade for the 2500, as it significantly reduces rotational resistance.
4. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated fully before tightening the cap.
-
Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog "hugs" the drive shaft properly.
-
Frame Integration: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake blocks are seated on the pins.
-
Side Plate: Reattach the side plate and secure the three thumb screws.
-
Spool Tension: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool is nearly zero. Pro Tip: With a bushing reel, always leave a hair of side-play to allow for oil circulation.
Technical Performance Note
The Ambassadeur 2500 (Pre-1975) is a testament to longevity. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are applying modern friction technology to vintage Swedish steel and brass. This setup eliminates the "heavy" feel typical of older bushing reels and provides a level of smoothness that protects the reel for another 50 years of use.
