Classic Performance Reborn: Smoothdrag Carbontex Drag Kit (27H) for Daiwa Conventional Reels
The Daiwa 27H, along with the legendary Millionaire and early Sealine series, helped set the standard for high-speed conventional reels. However, the original factory drag washers in these vintage gems—often made of leather, early composites, or hard plastics—are the "Achilles' heel" of an otherwise bulletproof design.
The Smoothdrag Carbontex Drag Kit (Part #27H) is the definitive way to "super-tune" these classic workhorses. By upgrading to high-density, cross-weave carbon fiber, you replace "sticky," unpredictable performance with a buttery-smooth, linear drag curve that can handle modern braided lines and the blistering runs of surf and boat species.
Why Upgrade Your Classic Daiwa to Carbontex?
-
Zero Start-Up Inertia: Eliminates the "stutter" or jerky hesitation when a fish first bolts. This protects your knots and prevents snapped leaders on light fluorocarbon or heavy braid.
-
Superior Thermal Stability: Carbon fiber dissipates heat far more efficiently than factory leather or fiber washers, preventing drag "fade" or glazing during a long fight.
-
Modern Line Ready: These reels were built for monofilament. Carbontex provides the consistent pressure required to handle the lack of stretch in modern braided lines.
-
Exceptional Durability: Carbontex is virtually wear-proof. It won't rot, compress, or degrade over time like original factory parts, making it a permanent performance upgrade.
Detailed Fitment & Compatibility
This kit is precision-lapped to fit the internal star drag stacks of several iconic Daiwa casting, surf, and trolling reels.
| Series | Compatible Models |
| Sealine / Sealine High Speed | 27H, 27SH |
| Millionaire Series | 3RM, 4HM, 5HM, 6RM, 6HM, 7M |
| Sealine Magforce / SM | SM1A, SM2, SM2A, SM25 |
| Surf Special | 7HT (Original Non-Mag Version) |
Pro Tip: Because many of these reels have been in service for decades, internal variations may exist depending on the production year or regional release. To ensure your washer sequence is perfect, you can find high-resolution, exploded-view PDF schematics at www.reelschematic.com.
Professional Installation & Lubrication
For these classic star drag reels, we strongly recommend a "wet drag" setup to ensure maximum smoothness and corrosion resistance:
-
Deuthlon Reel Grease: Apply an ultra-thin, translucent coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease (or Cal’s Universal Grease) to both sides of each Carbontex washer. This specialized PTFE-based grease prevents "chatter" and ensures the drag stays consistent even if the reel is splashed by heavy salt spray.
-
Drive Washer Inspection: Check your original stainless steel drive washers (the metal ones between the carbon). If they are pitted or show "blue" heat-staining, polish them with fine steel wool (0000 grade) or replace them to ensure they don't damage your new Carbontex.
-
Spindle Maintenance: While the side plate is off, apply a drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the spool bearings and spindle to restore that "like new" free-spool for better casting distance.
