This guide covers the maintenance and repair of the 2022 ION Alpha Plus 10-inch Electric Ice Auger (Model 59400). This model is characterized by its 40V battery system and high-torque brushless motor.

Safety Precautions

Before performing any repairs or maintenance:

  • Remove the battery. Never work on the unit while the power source is connected.

  • Keep the blade guard on. The 10-inch blades are razor-sharp and can cause severe injury even when the motor is off.

  • Work on a stable surface. Use a workbench or a clean, flat floor to prevent the auger from rolling.

Blade Replacement and Maintenance

Dull blades are the primary reason for poor performance. If the auger is "skating" on top of the ice or requires heavy downward pressure, the blades need attention.

Replacing the Blades

  1. Ensure the battery is removed.

  2. Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the two bolts holding each blade to the bottom of the flite.

  3. Clean any ice or debris from the mounting surface.

  4. Install the new blades (Part #24244 for the 10-inch model).

  5. Tighten the bolts securely but do not over-torque, as the mounting plate can strip.

Centering Point Maintenance

The threaded centering point at the bottom of the auger keeps the hole straight. If it is bent or dull:

  1. Unscrew the point using an adjustable wrench.

  2. Replace it with a genuine ION centering point to ensure the lead-in threads match the flite pitch.

Battery and Electrical Troubleshooting

The 40V Gen 3 battery system is the heart of this tool. Most "no-start" issues are electrical rather than mechanical.

Common Electrical Fixes

  • Terminal Cleaning: Check the copper contact points on both the battery and the auger head. If there is green oxidation or dirt, clean them with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.

  • Trigger Switch: If the motor is intermittent, the trigger assembly may have moisture inside. Place the power head in a warm, dry area for 24 hours. If the problem persists, the trigger switch assembly (located inside the handle) may need replacement.

  • Cold Weather Performance: If the battery is stored below 0°F (-18°C), it may refuse to discharge. Keep the battery in a warm pocket or insulated bag until ready for use.

Mechanical Repairs

Transmission and Gearbox

The Alpha Plus uses a planetary gear system. This is a sealed unit and rarely requires internal repair, but external issues can occur.

  • Loose Drive Bolt: If the motor spins but the flite does not, check the bolt connecting the power head output shaft to the flite. Replace if sheared.

  • Grease Leaks: A small amount of grease around the output shaft is normal over time. However, a significant leak indicates a failed seal. This generally requires a replacement of the lower transmission housing.

Handle and Frame

The handles on the 59400 are made of high-impact resin.

  • Cracked Handles: If a handle is cracked from a drop, do not attempt to epoxy it. The torque of the 10-inch bit is significant and can snap a weakened handle during a breakthrough. Replace the handle frame assembly.

Troubleshooting Table

Symptom Probable Cause Recommended Action
Auger won't turn on Dead battery or poor contact Charge battery; clean terminals with alcohol.
Motor stalls in thick ice High resistance / Dull blades Replace blades and check battery charge level.
Grinding noise in head Gearbox failure Inspect output shaft; replace transmission if internal.
Auger vibrates excessively Bent flite or loose blades Straighten flite or tighten blade mounting bolts.
Battery LED flashes red Internal battery fault Reset battery by charging; if it persists, replace battery.

Off-Season Storage

To ensure the auger is ready for the next season:

  1. Battery Care: Store the battery in a cool, dry place at approximately 30% to 50% charge. Do not store it completely empty or plugged into the charger for months.

  2. Rust Prevention: Wipe down the steel flite with a light coat of WD-40 or silicone spray to prevent surface rust.

  3. Bolt Check: Tighten all visible screws on the handle and power head, as vibrations from a 10-inch hole can loosen hardware over time.
