Ion 59250 ION ALPHA PLUS 8 SERIES 041457 2022
Loading Schematic Pages...
This guide covers the maintenance and repair of the 2022 ION Alpha Plus 8-inch electric ice auger (Model 59250). This specific series is known for its brushless motor and high-torque planetary gear system.
Safety First
Before performing any diagnosis or repair, remove the battery. Electric augers can trigger unexpectedly if the wiring is compromised or the trigger is depressed during handling.
Required Tools
-
Hex Key Set (Metric)
-
Socket Set (10mm and 13mm)
-
Needle-nose pliers
-
Multi-meter (for electrical troubleshooting)
-
Lithium-based grease
-
Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers
Troubleshooting Guide
| Symptom | Probable Cause | Solution |
| Auger will not turn on | Discharged or cold battery | Warm battery to room temp and charge fully. |
| Auger stalls in the cut | Dull blades or low battery | Replace blades or check battery charge level. |
| Grinding noise | Gearbox contamination or wear | Disassemble, clean, and re-grease gearbox. |
| Intermittent power | Loose internal wiring or faulty trigger | Inspect wire leads and trigger switch continuity. |
| Wobble during drilling | Bent flighting or loose collar bolt | Straighten flighting or tighten the 13mm collar bolt. |
Component Repair and Replacement
1. Blade Replacement and Maintenance
The Alpha Plus 8 Series uses a proprietary blade design. If the auger "bounces" on the ice without cutting, the blades are likely dull or the pitch is bent.
-
Removal: Use a 10mm wrench to remove the two bolts holding each blade to the bottom plate.
-
Inspection: Check the mounting plate for bends. Even a slight deviation in the angle (pitch) will prevent the auger from catching the ice.
-
Installation: Hand-tighten the bolts first to ensure they aren't cross-threaded. Tighten firmly, but do not over-torque, as the mounting plate is aluminum.
2. Gearbox Servicing
The planetary gear system is generally sealed, but after several seasons or heavy use, the grease can break down or leak.
-
Access: Remove the bolts securing the powerhead cover. Locate the gearbox housing beneath the motor.
-
Cleaning: Use a degreaser to remove old, blackened grease. Inspect the teeth of the planetary gears for chips or flattening.
-
Greasing: Apply a high-quality, low-temperature lithium grease. Do not overfill; the gears need room for thermal expansion during operation.
3. Electrical System and Trigger Assembly
If the motor is silent but the battery is confirmed "good" on another device, the issue is likely the trigger switch or the controller.
-
Trigger Test: Open the handle housing. Use a multi-meter to check for continuity across the switch when depressed. If the circuit stays open, the switch is dead.
-
Wiring: Check the "deadman" safety switch. Ensure the wires haven't vibrated loose from the spade connectors.
-
Controller: If the trigger and battery are functional but the motor won't spin, the internal brushless controller may have overheated. This component is typically replaced as a single module.
Storage and Longevity
To prevent the need for future repairs, follow these 2022-specific maintenance standards:
-
Battery Care: Never store the 40V battery in the "empty" state over summer. Keep it at approximately 50% to 70% charge in a cool, dry place.
-
Blade Guard: Always keep the guard on. The slightest "ding" on the corner of an ION blade can ruin its cutting geometry.
-
Moisture Management: After use, wipe down the powerhead. While water-resistant, snow melt can seep into the trigger housing and freeze, causing mechanical failure of the switch.
Note: If your auger is still within the 3-year manufacturer warranty (applicable to 2022 models), opening the motor or controller housing may void your coverage. Check your purchase date before performing internal electrical repairs.
