Ion 29250 ION X Complete 8 inch 024702 2016
Loading Schematic Pages...
Maintaining the Ion 29250 ION X (2016 model) is relatively straightforward because it lacks the carburetors and fuel lines of gas-powered units. However, because it is a high-torque electric tool, safety and precision are paramount.
Safety Procedures and Preparation
Before performing any maintenance or repair, follow these steps to prevent accidental activation or injury:
-
Remove the Battery: Always disconnect the 40V battery from the powerhead before touching the blades or opening the housing.
-
Blade Guard: Keep the blade guard on whenever you are not actively working on the bottom of the auger bit.
-
Work Surface: Use a stable workbench. If you are working on the blades, a vise can be helpful but is not strictly necessary.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Use this table to identify the likely cause of your auger's malfunction.
| Symptom | Potential Cause | Solution |
| Auger won't start | Battery not seated; Dead battery | Re-seat battery; Charge or replace battery |
| Motor hums but won't turn | Ice frozen in the flutes; Gearbox jam | Clear ice manually; Inspect transmission |
| Auger cuts slowly or bounces | Dull blades; Loose centering point | Replace blades; Tighten center point |
| Rattling noise during use | Loose bolts on the shaft or handle | Tighten all mounting hardware |
| Trigger feels "mushy" | Internal switch failure | Replace trigger assembly |
Component Repair and Replacement
Blade Replacement (Part #24244)
The 8-inch ION X uses two main steel blades and a centering point. If your auger is "skating" across the ice instead of biting, it is time for a change.
-
Secure the Auger: Lay the auger horizontally or secure the shaft in a vise.
-
Remove Mounting Bolts: Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the two bolts holding each blade to the bottom plate.
-
Inspect the Center Point: The small threaded point in the middle prevents drifting. If it is rounded or bent, unscrew it and replace it.
-
Install New Blades: Align the new blades. The beveled edge must face upward.
-
Tighten Hardware: Use a thread-locking compound (like blue Loctite) on the bolts to prevent them from vibrating loose during use.
Note: Do not attempt to hand-sharpen ION blades with a file unless you are highly experienced with blade angles. Improper angles will cause the auger to "catch" and kick back.
Transmission and Gearbox Lubrication
The ION X features a planetary gear system. While factory-sealed, high-use units may require re-greasing after several seasons.
-
Access the Gearbox: Remove the bolts securing the powerhead plastic shroud.
-
Inspect for Leaks: If you see dark oil or grease weeping from the bottom of the motor assembly, a seal may have failed.
-
Apply Grease: Use a high-quality, cold-weather multi-purpose lithium grease. It must be rated for sub-zero temperatures to ensure it doesn't harden and stall the motor.
-
Reassemble: Ensure the wiring is tucked away from the mounting pillars before tightening the shroud bolts.
Handlebar and Trigger Assembly
The 2016 ION X features aluminum handlebars. If the trigger fails to engage the motor:
-
Open the Handle Housing: Remove the Phillips head screws on the trigger side of the handle.
-
Check Connections: Ensure the spade connectors leading to the microswitch are tight and free of corrosion.
-
Test the Switch: Using a multimeter, check for continuity across the switch when the trigger is depressed. If there is no continuity, the switch (part of the wiring harness) must be replaced.
Battery and Charger Care
Since the 29250 model relies on the 5Ah (XC5) 40V battery, the electronics are the most sensitive component.
-
Cold Weather Performance: While the ION X is built for ice, the battery chemistry prefers to stay warm. Keep the battery in an insulated bag or inside your jacket until you are ready to drill.
-
Storage Charge: Never store the battery completely flat. For the off-season, charge it to approximately 60% to 70% and store it in a cool, dry place.
-
Terminal Cleaning: If the auger cuts out intermittently, use a cotton swab with a small amount of rubbing alcohol to clean the copper contacts on both the battery and the powerhead.
Off-Season Maintenance Checklist
Before putting the auger away for the summer:
-
Clean the Shaft: Wipe down the steel bit with a light coat of WD-40 or silicone spray to prevent surface rust.
-
Tighten the Allen Bolt: Check the large bolt that connects the auger bit to the powerhead. This is a common point of failure if it vibrates loose.
-
Inspect the Bottom Plate: Ensure the circular ring at the bottom of the flutes isn't bent. A warped plate will ruin the cutting geometry.
