Ion 23250 ION w Reverse 6 inch 022160 2015
Loading Schematic Pages...
This guide covers the maintenance and repair of the 2015 ION 40V Electric Ice Auger (Model 23250) with the 6-inch bit. Since this model is now over a decade old, many common issues relate to battery degradation, switch wear, or gearbox lubrication.
Safety First
Always remove the 40V battery before performing any maintenance or repairs. Accidental engagement of the trigger while working on the blades or gearbox can cause serious injury.
Required Tools
-
Allen Wrench Set (Metric and SAE)
-
Phillips and Flathead Screwdrivers
-
Socket Wrench Set (Specifically 10mm and 13mm)
-
White Lithium Grease (For the gearbox)
-
Multimeter (For electrical troubleshooting)
-
Work Gloves (Essential when handling blades)
Troubleshooting Guide
| Symptom | Potential Cause | Solution |
| Auger won't start | Battery not seated / Dead battery | Clean terminals; check voltage with multimeter. |
| Motor hums but won't turn | Frozen bit or Gearbox obstruction | Thaw the unit; check for tangled slush or gear debris. |
| Reverse switch doesn't work | Switch failure or Loose wiring | Inspect wiring behind the trigger assembly. |
| Auger cuts slowly | Dull or misaligned blades | Sharpen or replace blades; check for bent flighting. |
| High-pitched grinding noise | Dry or damaged planetary gears | Re-grease the gearbox. |
Common Repair Procedures
1. Blade Replacement or Sharpening
The 6-inch ION bit uses two steel blades. If the auger is "skating" on the ice rather than biting, the blades are likely dull or the mounting angle has been compromised.
-
Remove the blade protector.
-
Use a 10mm wrench or Allen key to remove the bolts holding the blades to the bottom of the flighting.
-
Inspect the base plate: Ensure the metal plate where the blades sit isn't bent. Even a slight bend will prevent the blades from catching the ice.
-
Install new blades: Align the holes and tighten the bolts firmly. Do not over-tighten, as you may strip the threads in the aluminum head.
2. Gearbox Maintenance
The ION uses a planetary gear system to convert high-speed motor rotation into high-torque drilling power.
-
Access the gearbox: Remove the bolts connecting the motor head assembly to the auger bit.
-
Open the housing: Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws on the underside of the green motor housing.
-
Inspect the grease: If the grease looks black, gritty, or is non-existent, wipe it out with a clean rag.
-
Apply Grease: Pack the planetary gears with White Lithium Grease. Do not overfill; a generous coating on all teeth is sufficient.
-
Reassemble: Ensure the gasket is seated correctly to prevent moisture from entering the motor.
3. Trigger and Reverse Switch Repair
The 2015 model features a simple toggle for reverse. Moisture is the primary enemy of these switches.
-
Open the Handlebar Assembly: Remove the screws securing the plastic clamshell around the handles.
-
Check Connections: Look for wires that have vibrated loose from the spade terminals on the back of the trigger or reverse switch.
-
Test the Switch: Using a multimeter set to Continuity, press the trigger. If the circuit doesn't close, the switch is burnt out and needs replacement.
-
Dry the Interior: If you see moisture or corrosion, clean the contacts with electronic cleaner and allow them to dry completely before reassembling.
Battery Care (40V Lithium-Ion)
Because this unit is from 2015, the original battery may be reaching the end of its life cycle.
-
Terminal Cleaning: Use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol to clean the copper contacts on both the battery and the auger head.
-
Storage: Never store the battery in a fully discharged state. Store it at roughly 50% to 70% charge in a cool, dry place.
-
Cold Weather Performance: If the auger loses power quickly in extreme cold, keep the battery inside your jacket or a heated "battery bag" until you are ready to drill.
Critical Measurements and Parts
-
Blade Bolt Torque: Approximately 8–10 ft-lbs.
-
Auger Bolt: 13mm (or 1/2 inch) hex head.
-
Extension Compatibility: Standard ION 12-inch or 24-inch extensions fit this 2015 shaft.
Note: If the motor itself fails (smell of burning electronics or visible smoke), it is generally more cost-effective to replace the power head than to attempt a motor rewind, given the age of the 23250 series.
