Repair Guide: ION 19150 (Model 019750 - 2014 Edition)
The ION 19150 was a pioneering model in the electric ice auger market. Given that this machine is from 2014, most issues you encounter will be related to battery degradation, gear lubrication, or electrical contact wear. This guide covers the most common repairs and maintenance tasks to keep your 8-inch auger drilling.
Safety First
Before performing any maintenance or repair, always remove the 40V battery. This prevents accidental activation of the blades, which can cause severe injury.
1. Battery and Power Troubleshooting
If the auger fails to start or lacks torque, the battery is the primary suspect, especially for a unit over a decade old.
-
Inspect Terminal Contacts: Check the copper contacts on both the battery and the auger head. If they appear green or dull, they are oxidized. Clean them using a cotton swab and 90% isopropyl alcohol or a fine-grit sandpaper (400 grit) to restore conductivity.
-
Check the State of Charge: If the battery displays a full charge but "dies" the moment it hits the ice, the internal lithium cells likely have high internal resistance. At this age, a replacement 40V ION battery is often the only permanent fix.
-
Cold Weather Performance: Remember that 2014-era lithium technology is sensitive to cold. Keep the battery in a localized heater or your jacket until you are ready to drill.
2. Blade Maintenance and Replacement
A dull blade forces the motor to work harder, draining the battery and stressing the planetary gears.
-
Inspection: Feel the edge of the blades (carefully). If you see nicks or can feel a "rolled" edge, the blades need sharpening or replacement.
-
Replacement Process:
-
Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the bolts holding the two bottom blades.
-
Note the orientation of the bevel (the slanted edge).
-
Install new ION 8-inch blades (Part #18959).
-
Apply a small amount of blue thread locker to the bolts to prevent them from vibrating loose during use.
-
-
Centering Point: Ensure the pilot bit (the point in the center) is sharp. If it is dull, the auger will "skate" across the ice instead of biting.
3. Gearbox Lubrication and Maintenance
The ION uses a planetary gear system to convert high-speed motor rotation into high-torque drilling power. Over time, the factory grease can harden or leak.
-
Symptoms: Grinding noises, a high-pitched squeal, or the auger spinning but stopping under load.
-
Re-greasing the Gearbox:
-
Remove the screws securing the plastic outer housing.
-
Locate the transmission/gearbox assembly.
-
Open the gearbox cover.
-
Clean out old, hardened grease using a degreaser.
-
Replace with a high-quality low-temperature synthetic grease (such as Mag-1 or similar multi-purpose lithium grease). Do not overfill; the gears should be coated, but there should be room for air expansion.
-
-
Shear Bolt: If the motor spins but the bit does not move at all, check the shear bolt connecting the powerhead to the auger flighting. If it is snapped, replace it with the specific ION grade-5 bolt.
4. Trigger and Reverse Switch Repair
The 2014 model features a momentary trigger and a toggle switch for reverse.
-
Reverse Switch Issues: If the auger only works in one direction, the toggle switch may have internal corrosion. You can often fix this by spraying a small amount of electronic contact cleaner into the base of the switch and toggling it back and forth 20 to 30 times while the battery is removed.
-
Trigger Safety: The ION has a safety lock that must be depressed before the trigger. If the trigger feels "mushy," the internal plastic spring or the microswitch may be misaligned. You will need to split the handle casing to realign the trigger assembly with the internal switch.
5. Drive Shaft Maintenance
-
Preventative Care: At the end of every season, remove the auger bit from the powerhead.
-
Lubrication: Apply a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant or marine-grade grease to the output shaft. This prevents the bit from becoming "frozen" to the powerhead due to rust and moisture.
