This repair guide addresses the ION 11733 (8-inch) Electric Ice Auger, specifically the 2012 production series. As a first-generation electric auger, common issues typically involve the battery interface, the trigger assembly, or the mechanical drive bolt.

Safety First

Warning: Always remove the 40V battery from the powerhead before performing any maintenance, blade changes, or repairs. This prevents accidental activation which can cause severe injury.

Required Tools and Supplies

  • Metric Hex Key Set (Allen wrenches)

  • Socket Wrench Set (specifically 10mm and 13mm)

  • Flathead and Phillips Screwdrivers

  • Low-Temperature Lithium Grease

  • Clean Rags and Isopropyl Alcohol

1. Blade Maintenance and Replacement

Dull blades put unnecessary strain on the motor and battery, significantly reducing holes per charge.

  1. Inspection: Check for nicks or rounding of the edge. If the auger "bounces" on the ice without cutting, the blades are dull.

  2. Removal: Use a 10mm socket or wrench to remove the two bolts holding each blade to the bottom of the flighting.

  3. Centering Point: Inspect the threaded centering point (the "pilot bit"). If it is blunt, the auger will drift. Replace it by unscrewing it with a large wrench.

  4. Installation: Bolt the new blades on with the beveled edge facing up toward the powerhead. Tighten securely but do not over-torque, as the threads in the aluminum cast can strip.

2. Drive Bolt (Shear Bolt) Replacement

If the motor spins but the auger bit does not turn, the connection bolt has likely sheared. This is a safety feature designed to protect the motor when hitting an obstruction.

  1. Alignment: Align the hole in the auger bit shank with the hole in the motor output shaft.

  2. Replacement: Use a Grade 5 or higher M8 bolt (or the official ION replacement bolt).

  3. Note: Do not use a standard hardware store "soft" bolt, as it will shear too easily. Conversely, do not use a Grade 8 bolt, as it may be too strong and cause motor damage instead of snapping.

3. Battery and Trigger Troubleshooting

The 2012 models occasionally suffer from contact issues or moisture in the trigger housing.

  • Cleaning Contacts: Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the copper terminals on both the battery and the powerhead. Ensure no debris is lodged in the battery rails.

  • Trigger Lag: If there is a delay when pulling the trigger, check the safety lock-out switch. If moisture has entered the housing, remove the plastic cover screws and use a hair dryer on a "cool" setting to dry the internal micro-switch.

  • Cold Weather Performance: The 2012-era 40V batteries are sensitive to extreme cold. If the auger loses power, keep the battery in an insulated bag or inside your jacket until ready to drill.

4. Gearbox Lubrication

The planetary gear system is sealed but may require fresh grease if you notice a high-pitched grinding sound or if the auger was stored in a high-heat environment where grease may have thinned and leaked.

  1. Access: Remove the bolts securing the plastic motor shroud.

  2. Greasing: Remove the gearbox cover plates. Clean out any old, darkened grease.

  3. Application: Apply a high-quality Low-Temperature Lithium Grease. Standard automotive grease will thicken in the cold and prevent the auger from turning.

  4. Reassembly: Ensure the gasket is seated properly to prevent moisture from entering the gear housing.

Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom Probable Cause Fix
Motor hums but won't turn Frozen flighting or Gearbox ice Bring indoors to thaw; check for ice between the bit and the powerhead.
Auger stops mid-cut Battery over-current protection Ease up on downward pressure; let the blades do the work.
Intermittent Power Loose battery or dirty contacts Ensure battery is "clicked" fully into place; clean terminals.
Vibration while cutting Loose blade bolts or bent shaft Tighten all 10mm bolts; inspect the flighting for straightness.

Storage Tip: For off-season storage, never leave the battery on the charger. Charge it to approximately 50-70% and store it in a cool, dry place. Unplug the auger bit from the powerhead and grease the output shaft to prevent rust-bonding.
