Lew’s Mr. Crappie Slab Shaker (SD1) Repair & Maintenance Guide
The Mr. Crappie Slab Shaker (SD1) is a specialized, ultra-compact "underspin" or trigger-spin reel. It combines the ease of a spincast reel with the balance of a spinning reel, specifically designed for tight-line jigging and dipping into heavy cover.
Because these reels are often subjected to "swampy" conditions—fine pollen, duckweed, and murky water—the internal trigger mechanism and the front cone require regular cleaning to prevent the line from snagging during a cast.
1. Exterior Breakdown: The Front Cone
The most common failure point on the SD1 isn't the gears, but the front shroud collecting debris.
-
Removing the Cone: Twist the front silver/graphite cone counter-clockwise to remove it.
-
The Pickup Pin: This reel uses a stainless steel pickup pin. If the pin is "sticky" and doesn't retract when the trigger is pulled, your line will snap.
-
The Fix: Wipe the pin and the rotor assembly with alcohol. Apply one drop of light oil to the pin's base. Never grease this area, as grease will trap line fibers and cause the pin to jam.
-
2. The Trigger Mechanism
The "Slab Shaker" trigger is a mechanical lever that manually pulls the rotor back to release the line.
-
Trigger Tension: If the trigger feels "mushy," the internal return spring is likely clogged with old grease.
-
Cleaning: Access the trigger pivot point by removing the side screw. Clean the hinge with a cotton swab. Apply a tacky synthetic grease to the pivot to maintain a crisp "snap."
3. Internal Gearbox: Simple & Rugged
The SD1 uses a 2-bearing system (1+1). The internals are significantly simpler than a standard spinning reel, utilizing a direct-drive oscillation.
-
Opening the Body: Remove the handle by unscrewing the cap on the opposite side. Remove the screws on the side plate.
-
The Main Gear: The gear is typically a zinc alloy. In these small reels, the gear teeth are very fine.
-
Lubrication: * Grease: Apply a small amount of synthetic grease to the main gear and the small pinion gear.
-
Oil: Apply one drop of oil to the bushings/bearings on either side of the main gear.
-
4. Spool & Line Management
The SD1 has a very narrow spool. If the line is "digging in" or coming off in loops:
-
Spool Inspection: Remove the rotor (the part with the pickup pin) by unscrewing the center nut. Lift off the spool.
-
The "Under-Spool" Clean: Check for line that has wrapped around the main shaft behind the spool. This is the #1 cause of the reel becoming "hard to turn."
-
Drag Adjustment: The SD1 uses a rear-drag system. If the drag doesn't click, the small metal "clicker" leaf spring inside the rear knob is likely bent or broken.
5. Troubleshooting the Slab Shaker
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Line won't release on cast | Pickup pin is stuck "out." | Clean and oil the pin; check for a burr on the pin surface. |
| Grinding noise when reeling | Grit inside the front cone. | Remove cone and wash with freshwater; salt/sand often traps here. |
| Handle spins both ways | Anti-reverse failure. | The SD1 uses a multi-point anti-reverse. Clean the "dog" (pawl) with alcohol. |
| Drag is stuck/frozen | Rusted drag washers. | Disassemble the rear drag stack; clean with a wire brush and re-oil. |
6. Reassembly Checklist
-
Rotor Alignment: When replacing the rotor, ensure the "keyway" on the shaft aligns with the rotor hole before tightening the nut.
-
Handle Tension: Ensure the handle is seated deeply in the gears before tightening the side cap.
-
Trigger Check: Before putting the front cone back on, pull the trigger 5–10 times to ensure the pickup pin retracts fully into the rotor every single time.
Summary Checklist
-
Grease: Internal Gears, Trigger Pivot.
-
Oil: Pickup Pin, Main Shaft, Handle Bearings.
-
Avoid: Do not get grease on the line or the spool face; it will cause the line to stick to the spool during the cast.
