Comprehensive Repair and Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Speed Cast Round (SC600L)

The Lew’s Speed Cast SC600L is a traditional round profile reel built for heavy-duty applications like catfishing, trolling, and tossing large swimbaits. Unlike the low-profile LFS series, the SC600L features a high-capacity aluminum spool and a synchronized level wind system. The "L" designation indicates the 600-size frame, which is the largest in the series.

Step 1: External Disassembly

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut cap screw and the locking plate. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Pull off the handle, the tension washer (spring washer), and the star drag.

  2. Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three large thumb screws on the gear-side plate. These are designed to be loosened by hand, though a flat-head screwdriver may be needed for the initial turn. Pull the gear-side plate away from the frame.

  3. Spool and Shaft: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note that on round reels, the spool shaft is longer and interacts directly with the clicker mechanism on the opposite side.

Step 2: Servicing the Synchronized Level Wind

One of the most critical features of the SC600L is that the level wind moves during the cast to reduce line angles.

  1. Inspection: Check the Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear (the plastic gear that connects the spool to the level wind). If the plastic idler gear has chipped teeth, the level wind will skip, causing line to bunch up.

  2. Cleaning: Round reels are often used in dirty or sandy environments. Use a brush and solvent to remove grit from the worm shaft track.

  3. The Pawl: Unscrew the cap on the bottom of the line guide. Remove the metal pawl. If the "teeth" of the pawl are worn or flattened, replace it to prevent the level wind from jamming.

Step 3: Gear and Drag Maintenance

The SC600L utilizes a high-torque brass main gear and a multi-disk drag system.

  1. Main Gear: Clean the brass main gear thoroughly. Because this reel is built for torque, check for "scoring" on the bottom of the gear where it sits against the drag washers.

  2. Drag System: The 600L features a heavy-duty carbon-teflon drag stack.

    • To maintain the high drag pressure required for large fish, ensure the washers are clean.

    • Tip: Apply a generous coat of specialized drag grease to these washers. Unlike high-speed baitcasters, round reels benefit from "wet" drags to prevent jerky movements during long, powerful runs.

  3. Anti-Reverse Dog: In addition to the one-way clutch bearing, many round reels have a backup "anti-reverse dog" (a small metal pawl). Ensure this is clicking properly and not stuck in old grease.

Step 4: Lubrication Protocol

  • Bearings: Round reels typically have larger, shielded stainless steel bearings. Flush them and apply two drops of medium-viscosity oil.

  • Main Gear: Apply a thick layer of blue or red synthetic grease. The larger teeth of the SC600L can handle more grease than low-profile reels, which helps dampen vibration.

  • Level Wind: This is the most important lube point for this model. Apply a light grease to the worm shaft and a drop of oil to the idler gear.

  • Bait Clicker: Apply a small dab of grease to the clicker tongue and spring on the palm-side plate to prevent rust and ensure a loud, crisp sound.

Step 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Spool Alignment: Ensure the spool shaft engages with the slot in the palm side plate before pushing the gear side plate back on.

  2. Thumb Screws: Tighten the three thumb screws evenly. Do not over-tighten, as you may need to remove them in the field for quick maintenance.

  3. Centrifugal Brakes: The SC600L uses a simple 2-pin internal brake system on the spool. Ensure the pins are clean and move freely on their posts.

Maintenance Checklist for Round Reels

Feature Maintenance Frequency Action
Bait Clicker Every 3 months Check tension and grease the spring.
Worm Shaft Every 2-3 trips Clean out debris and re-oil.
Thumb Bar Seasonally Grease the pivot points of the clutch.
Frame Screws Monthly Check for tightness (vibration can loosen thumb screws).

Safety Note: Because the SC600L is often used for heavy trolling or catfishing, the drag washers can compress over time if left tightened. Always "back off" the star drag to the loosest setting when the reel is not in use to preserve the life of the drag stack.
