Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Laser SG (LSR22) Right-Hand Casting Reel
The Lew’s Laser SG (LSR22) is the right-handed counterpart to the model previously discussed. While the internal mechanics are identical in quality, there is one critical difference during the teardown: threading direction. If you are experiencing a loss in casting distance or a "geary" feel during the retrieve, follow this guide to restore the reel to factory smoothness.
Critical Difference: Threading
The most important distinction for the LSR22 (Right-Hand) vs. the LSR22L (Left-Hand) is the handle nut:
-
LSR22 (Right-Hand): The handle nut uses standard threads. Turn Counter-Clockwise to loosen.
-
Drive Shaft: All internal components on the drive shaft are oriented for right-hand operation, but the stack order remains the same.
Step 1: External Component Removal
-
The Handle: Remove the retainer screw and the 10mm handle nut. Pull the handle and the spring washer (star drag washer) off the drive shaft.
-
Star Drag & Tension: Unscrew the star drag. Note the orientation of the Belleville Washers (the two bowed washers). They should be placed back in an "opposing" position
()to provide the necessary spring tension for the drag. -
Spool Access: Rotate the palm-side plate to the "open" position. Slide the spool out. Check the spool shaft ends for any black residue—this is a sign of friction and old oil.
Step 2: Interior Cleaning
-
Side Plate Screws: Remove the three gear-side housing screws.
-
Degreasing: Use a dedicated reel cleaner or high-percentage isopropyl alcohol. Focus specifically on the Pinion Gear and the Main Gear.
-
Level Wind System: Often overlooked, the Worm Gear (the spiral bar at the front) collects the most debris. Use a cotton swab to clean the channel. If the line guide isn't moving smoothly, unscrew the "pawl" cap at the bottom of the guide and check the small metal tooth for flat spots.
Step 3: Proper Lubrication Points
The Laser SG series responds best to a "less is more" approach.
-
Main Gear (Grease): Use a brush to apply grease to the teeth. You do not need to fill the gaps completely; the rotation will distribute a thin film.
-
Spool Bearings (Oil): The LSR22 has a premium bearing system. Apply one drop of thin oil to the bearing in the palm side plate and the one on the spool shaft.
-
Anti-Reverse Bearing: This is the "roller" bearing inside the side plate. Do not grease this. If it is contaminated, it will slip. Clean it with a swab and apply one drop of oil only if it is noisy.
Step 4: Reassembly Notes
-
Pinion Alignment: When sliding the gear housing back on, ensure the Pinion Yoke is seated properly on the two posts. If the housing doesn't sit flush, do not force it—wiggle the handle drive shaft to align the gears.
-
Drag Stack: Ensure the Rulon washers are seated flat inside the main gear. Any canting or misalignment will cause a "jerky" drag when a fish pulls line.
-
Brake Setting: Once reassembled, reset your Magnetic Brake System (the dial on the side). Set it to the middle (5 or 6) and perform a test cast with a practice plug to ensure the magnets are engaging.
Summary Table for Quick Reference

| Pinion Gear | Grease | Light coat |
| Spool Bearings | Thin Oil | 1 Drop per bearing |
| Worm Gear | Grease/Oil | Light coat on spiral |
| Handle Knobs | Oil | 1 Drop at base |
| Drag Washers | Dry or Grease | Clean with alcohol |
