Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s BB1MB Speed Spool
The Lew’s BB1MB is a modern classic, designed as a "nod" to the original BB1 but built with contemporary materials. The "M" in the model name identifies this as the Multi-stop anti-reverse version. Unlike the "Zero-Reverse" models that stop dead, the BB1MB has a slight bit of handle play and a nostalgic "clicking" sound that many crankbait enthusiasts prefer for better feel and reduced shock on the gear train.
This reel features a one-piece aluminum frame, a premium 10-bearing system, and the Multi-Setting Brake (MSB). Because it is often used for high-vibration lures like deep-diving crankbaits, the screws and gears take a lot of "thump." Regular maintenance is the only way to prevent the brass gears from grinding.
Tools and Supplies Needed
-
Tools: 10mm nut driver (for the handle nut), a precision Phillips head screwdriver, and a pair of tweezers.
-
Cleaning: 90% or higher Isopropyl alcohol and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
-
Lubrication: High-quality synthetic reel grease and low-viscosity reel oil.
-
Organization: A white towel or magnetic parts tray. The BB1MB has several small springs and "clicker" components that act like projectiles if you aren't careful.
Step 1: External Disassembly
-
Handle Removal: Unscrew the retainer screw. Use the 10mm driver to remove the handle nut (Counter-Clockwise to loosen for this right-hand model). Pull off the handle and the star drag.
-
Star Drag Assembly: Pay close attention to the Belleville Washers (the two bowed spring washers). For the drag to function with its full range of pressure, they must be reinstalled in an "opposing" orientation
(). -
Tension Knob: Unscrew the cast control knob. Inside is a small copper shim and a bearing. If the shim has a deep "dimple" from the spool shaft, the spool won't center properly. You can often flip the shim over for a fresh surface.
Step 2: The Multi-Setting Brake (MSB)
The BB1MB uses a dual-braking system that requires specific cleaning:
-
Palm Side Plate: Rotate the side plate lever to the open position and remove the plate.
-
The Magnets: Wipe the magnetic bank inside the side plate with a dry cloth. Do not use grease here; it will cause the magnetic field to become inconsistent.
-
The Centrifugal Hub: On the spool, you will see the white centrifugal tabs. They should click "in" and "out" freely.
-
The Friction Ring: Clean the brass ring inside the side plate where the tabs rub. Use alcohol to remove any grease. For silent operation, wipe a micro-film of oil onto this ring with a cotton swab—just enough to make it look damp.
Step 3: Accessing the Gear Box
-
Side Plate Removal: Remove the three housing screws from the gear-side plate. Note that one is usually shorter than the others; keep them organized.
-
Main Gear & Drag: Slide the Solid Brass Main Gear off the drive shaft.
-
Cleaning: Scrub the teeth with alcohol until every valley is clear of old, darkened grease.
-
Drag Stack: The BB1MB uses a high-performance carbon fiber drag system. Wipe the washers with a clean, dry cloth. You can run them dry for max power or with an ultra-thin "skin" of specialized drag grease for smoothness.
-
-
Pinion Gear & Yoke: The pinion is the small brass gear. This model features a bearing-supported pinion (P2 Super Pinion). Ensure the bearing is flushed and oiled.
Step 4: Lubrication and Reassembly
-
Gears: Apply a light-to-moderate coat of synthetic grease to the teeth of the main gear and pinion gear.
-
Bearings: Flush the bearings with alcohol, dry them, and apply one drop of thin oil.
-
Worm Gear (Level Wind): Clean the level wind track thoroughly. Apply a light coat of grease. If the line doesn't stack evenly, check the Pawl (the tooth inside the line guide) for wear.
BB1MB Technical Summary and Troubleshooting
| Component | Specification / Type | Maintenance Action |
| Main Gear | Solid Brass | Scrub teeth with alcohol; grease lightly. |
| Anti-Reverse | Multi-Stop Mechanical | Oil Only. Keep it free of heavy grease. |
| Brakes | MSB (Magnetic + Centrifugal) | Keep the friction hub clean; micro-oil film. |
| Frame | One-piece Aluminum | Wipe interior with alcohol; check drainage ports. |
Troubleshooting Common Issues
-
Handle "Back-Slap": Since the BB1MB is a multi-stop system, some handle movement is normal. However, if it moves more than 1/8th of a turn, the mechanical dog is likely gummed up. Clean with alcohol and re-oil.
-
"Geary" Feeling: This is common after heavy cranking. It usually indicates that the grease has been pushed off the teeth. A fresh application of synthetic grease on the brass main gear usually fixes this.
-
Screaming during Cast: This is almost always a dry centrifugal brake ring. Apply a tiny amount of oil to the brass ring inside the palm side plate.
Pro Tip: When putting the gear-side plate back on, rotate the handle slightly as you lower the plate. This helps the gears mesh and ensures the P2 pinion slides over the spool shaft without forcing the screws.
