Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s BB1 Speed Spool (BB1LMG)
The Lew’s BB1LMG is a specialized machine for the angler who prefers a left-hand retrieve but demands the old-school feel of a multi-stop anti-reverse. To decode the model: L means Left-Hand, M signifies the Multi-stop (mechanical clicker) system, and G denotes the weight-saving Graphite-reinforced side plates.
This reel is a winching powerhouse, typically used for deep-diving crankbaits where the "back-play" of a multi-stop system actually helps absorb the vibration of the lure. Because it’s a left-handed model with a mechanical anti-reverse "dog," the reassembly process has a few unique traps that can ruin your day if you aren't careful.
Phase 1: The Left-Hand Disassembly Trap
Before you grab your wrench, remember the most important rule of the BB1LMG:
The Threading is Reversed. On this left-hand model, the handle nut is Clockwise-threaded to loosen. If you turn it counter-clockwise, you will strip the brass drive shaft, and that is an expensive mistake.
-
Remove the Handle: Unscrew the retainer screw. Turn the 10mm handle nut Clockwise to remove it. Pull off the handle.
-
Star Drag & Springs: Spin off the star drag. Beneath it, you will find two bowed Belleville Washers. For the drag to work, they must be reinstalled in an opposing orientation
(). -
Graphite Side Plate (G): Locate the release lever on the bottom of the palm-side plate. Rotate and remove. Slide out the spool.
Phase 2: Servicing the Multi-Setting Brake (MSB)
The BB1LMG uses a dual-braking system. Since this reel is often used for heavy cranking, these brakes get dirty quickly.
-
The Magnets: Use a dry cotton swab to wipe the magnetic bank inside the side plate. Do not apply oil or grease to the magnets; it creates a "hydroplane" effect that kills braking consistency.
-
Centrifugal Tabs: On the spool side, ensure the four white tabs click in and out freely. If they are gummy, clean the tracks with 90% isopropyl alcohol.
-
The Friction Hub: There is a brass ring inside the side plate where the tabs rub. Clean this ring until it shines. If your reel "screams" on the cast, apply the tiniest microscopic film of oil to this ring—just enough to make it look damp.
Phase 3: Accessing the "Multi-Stop" Internals
-
Opening the Gear Side: Remove the three screws from the graphite side plate.
-
Note: Since these are G-series (graphite) plates, do not over-tighten the screws during reassembly. You are threading metal into a composite material; it is very easy to strip the housing.
-
-
The Main Gear: Slide the Solid Brass Main Gear off the drive shaft. Brass is used in the BB1 series for its sheer durability under the "thump" of large lures.
-
The Multi-Stop Dog: At the base of the drive shaft, you will see a small metal arm (the anti-reverse dog).
-
Maintenance: This is what gives the BB1M its characteristic click. Clean the dog and the ratchet teeth with alcohol.
-
Critical Lube Rule: Apply one drop of oil to the dog. Never grease this part. Grease will cause the dog to stick, meaning your handle will spin backward when you try to set the hook.
-
Phase 4: Lubrication Strategy
-
Main Gears: Apply a moderate coat of synthetic grease to the teeth of the brass main gear and the pinion gear. Use a small brush to ensure the grease is in the "valleys" of the teeth.
-
Spool Bearings: This reel features a high-bearing count. Flush the two main casting bearings with alcohol, dry them, and apply one drop of thin, high-speed oil.
-
Worm Gear (Level Wind): Clean any debris or grass out of the level wind. Use a light oil rather than grease to ensure the oscillation remains fast and smooth.
BB1LMG Troubleshooting & Specifications
| Symptom | Probable Cause | Action |
| Handle spins backward | Greased Anti-Reverse Dog | Degrease the "dog" with alcohol; use 1 drop of oil. |
| Screeching on cast | Dry Centrifugal Ring | Apply a micro-film of oil to the brass ring in the side plate. |
| Handle feels "stiff" | Over-tightened Side Plate | Loosen the three housing screws slightly; ensure gears are meshed. |
| Erratic Drag | Oily Carbon Washers | Clean the washers with alcohol and run them dry or with dedicated drag grease. |
Final Reassembly Note
When putting the gear-side plate back on, rotate the handle slightly while you lower the plate. This allows the brass gears to mesh naturally. If the plate doesn't sit perfectly flush against the frame, do not force it with the screws. Lift it back up, check that the two Pinion Yoke Springs are standing straight, and try again.
