Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Speed Spool (Vintage BB1LE)
The Lew’s BB1LE is a rare and highly-regarded vintage treasure from the original "Shimano-era" (manufactured in Japan by Shimano for Lew Childre). The BB1 is the legendary platform that introduced the low-profile "teardrop" shape to the world. In this model, the L indicates Left-Hand Retrieve, and the E denotes the specific E-Series production run—often considered the "gold standard" for smoothness and durability in the vintage baitcasting world.
This reel is a winching beast, typically featuring a standard power gear ratio (approx. 4.7:1 or 5.1:1). It utilizes a one-piece die-cast aluminum frame and a mechanical multi-stop anti-reverse system.
Phase 1: The Left-Hand Disassembly Trap
As with all vintage Lew's left-handed models, the biggest risk is stripping the brass drive shaft by turning the nuts the wrong way.
-
The Handle Nut: On the BB1LE, the handle nut is Clockwise-threaded to loosen. If you turn it counter-clockwise, you are actually tightening it.
-
The Star Drag: Like the nut, the star drag spins Clockwise to come off the shaft.
Steps:
-
Remove the retainer screw and use a 10mm driver to turn the handle nut Clockwise to remove.
-
Spin the star drag Clockwise to remove.
-
The Drag Stack: Beneath the star, locate the two bowed Belleville Washers. For the drag to function, they must be reinstalled in an opposing orientation
(). If they are stacked nested((, you will have zero drag adjustment range.
Phase 2: Accessing the "Shimano-Built" Internals
The BB1LE is famous for its simple, over-engineered internal components.
-
Opening the Housing: Remove the three housing screws from the gear-side plate. Note that vintage screws can be soft; use a driver that fits perfectly to avoid "cam-out."
-
The Main Gear: You will find a Heavy-Duty Solid Brass Main Gear.
-
Cleaning: Over 40+ years, the original grease often polymerizes into a waxy substance. Scrub the teeth with a toothbrush and 90% isopropyl alcohol until they are spotless.
-
-
The Drag System: The BB1LE uses a traditional multi-disc drag. These vintage washers are best run completely dry. If they are soaked in oil, the drag will "stutter" or feel inconsistent. Wipe them clean with a dry cloth.
-
Pinion Gear: Check the two "ears" on the pinion gear where it meets the spool shaft. If these are rounded, the reel may slip under heavy load.
Phase 3: The Mechanical Anti-Reverse (The "Dog")
The BB1LE does not have a silent roller bearing; it uses a mechanical Anti-Reverse Pawl (the "dog") that creates a classic clicking sound during the retrieve.
-
Maintenance: If the handle spins backward, the dog is stuck in old grease. Flush the pawl and the notched ratchet at the base of the drive shaft with alcohol.
-
The Golden Rule: Apply one drop of oil to the pawl. Never grease this part. Grease causes the pawl to "float" and fail to catch the teeth, causing the handle to spin backward uncontrollably on a hookset.
Phase 4: Centrifugal Braking & Lubrication
The BB1LE utilizes the original 2-Pin Centrifugal Brake System.
-
Brake Weights: Check the two plastic collars (weights) on the spool shaft. Ensure they are not cracked.
-
The Hub: Clean the metal friction ring inside the side plate with alcohol.
-
Pro Tip: For a silent cast, wipe a microscopic film of oil onto this ring with a cotton swab—just enough to make it look damp. This silences the "screech" common in vintage BB1s.
-
Bearings: These vintage Japanese bearings are incredibly durable. Flush them with alcohol, dry them, and apply one drop of thin oil.
BB1LE Technical Summary
| Component | Material / Type | Maintenance Action |
| Gear Ratio | ~5:1 (Power Retrieve) | Deep clean brass teeth; apply synthetic grease. |
| Anti-Reverse | Multi-Stop Mechanical Dog | Oil only. No grease on the pawl. |
| Frame | One-piece Die-Cast Aluminum | Wipe with alcohol; do not use harsh solvents on the finish. |
| Brakes | 2-Pin Centrifugal | Keep friction hub clean; check weights for cracks. |
Common BB1LE Issue:
Because the BB1LE is a standard-speed reel, it is often used for high-resistance baits like deep-diving crankbaits. This puts massive pressure on the Worm Gear (Level Wind). If your line stacks unevenly, the Pawl (the small tooth inside the line guide) is likely worn out. These are easy to replace and should be checked annually.
