This group of reels represents the modern BB1 Speed Spool family. These are built on the larger, original-style aluminum frame (not the SLP frame), which is prized for its massive line capacity and world-class casting distance.

The primary difference across these models is the Anti-Reverse System and the Gear Ratio.

Understanding the Model Suffixes

Model Retrieve Gear Ratio Anti-Reverse Type
BB1 Right 5.1:1 Multi-Stop (Mechanical "Dog")
BB1L Left 5.1:1 Multi-Stop (Mechanical "Dog")
BB1HZ Right 6.4:1 Zero-Reverse (Instant)
BB1HZL Left 6.4:1 Zero-Reverse (Instant)
BB1SHZ Right 7.1:1 Zero-Reverse (Instant)
BB1SHZL Left 7.1:1 Zero-Reverse (Instant)

Phase 1: Disassembly (The Threading Trap)

Crucial Warning for Left-Hand Models (L, HZL, SHZL):

The handle nut and star drag on left-handed models are Clockwise-threaded to loosen. Turning them counter-clockwise will strip the drive shaft. Right-hand models (BB1, HZ, SHZ) are standard (counter-clockwise to loosen).

  1. Handle & Star: Remove the retainer screw, handle nut, handle, and star drag.

  2. Belleville Washers: Beneath the star are two bowed washers. Reinstall them in an opposing () orientation to maintain drag spring tension.

  3. Spool Access: Pull the release pin on the bottom of the palm-side plate, rotate the plate, and remove. Slide out the oversized spool.

Phase 2: The Braking Systems

These reels use a specialized Centrifugal Braking System.

  • BB1 / BB1L (Multi-Stop Models): These often feature a 6-pin system. Ensure the white brake shoes click freely.

  • HZ / SHZ (Zero-Reverse Models): These often utilize the SmartCast® system.

  • Maintenance: Clean the brass friction ring inside the side plate with alcohol. If the reel "screeches" during a cast, wipe a microscopic film of oil onto the ring with a cotton swab. Do not use grease.

Phase 3: Servicing the Gear Train

  1. Side Plate: Remove the three housing screws. Note that the screw near the thumb bar is usually shorter.

  2. Main Gear: All these models feature high-strength Solid Brass Speed Gears.

    • Cleaning: Scrub the teeth with a toothbrush and alcohol until spotless.

    • Greasing: Apply a thin, even coat of synthetic grease.

  3. The Anti-Reverse Conflict:

    • BB1 / BB1L: Look for the mechanical metal "dog" (pawl). Oil only (one drop). Never grease the dog, or the handle will spin backward.

    • HZ / SHZ: These use a one-way roller bearing in the side plate. Keep it clean and dry. A single drop of oil is okay, but grease will cause the bearing to fail.

Phase 4: Lubrication Strategy

  • Spool Bearings: These are the "engines" of the BB1's distance. Flush with alcohol, dry completely, and add one drop of very thin high-speed oil.

  • P2 Super Pinion: All these models feature a bearing-supported pinion gear. Oil this bearing to ensure the reel stays smooth under the heavy load of deep-diving crankbaits.

  • Worm Gear: Use a light oil or very thin grease. Because the BB1 is a long-distance reel, a heavy grease on the level wind will create "drag" that shortens your casts.

Troubleshooting & Specs

Symptom Probable Cause Fix
Handle Back-slap (BB1/BB1L) Greased Anti-Reverse Dog Degrease pawl; use 1 drop of oil.
Screaming Cast Dry Brake Ring Wipe brass ring in side plate with micro-film of oil.
Loss of Distance Dirty Spool Bearings Flush bearings in alcohol; re-oil with 1 drop.
Thumb bar sticks Dry Clutch Linkage Grease the sliding metal plates inside the frame.

Pro Tip: The BB1 series is famous for its "casting "distance. To maximize this, ensure the Line Guide is centered on the spool before you make a long cast. If the line is peeling off at an extreme angle to the guide, it creates friction that kills your distance.
