Hardy Ultralite DD Black Series
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Ultralite DD (Disc Drag) Black Series is a lightweight, high-performance reel known for its large arbor and smooth drag system. While these reels are built to last, grit, salt, and general wear can eventually affect performance.
This guide covers basic maintenance and common repairs. If the internal drag housing is physically cracked or the main shaft is bent, professional servicing by Hardy is recommended.
Required Tools and Materials
-
Clean, lint-free cloth
-
Cotton swabs (Q-tips)
-
Mild dish soap and warm water
-
High-quality synthetic reel grease
-
Lightweight synthetic reel oil
-
Small flat-head screwdriver (only for handle or clicker adjustments)
Disassembly and Cleaning
Most performance issues with the Ultralite DD stem from "river sludge" or fine sand entering the spool housing.
-
Remove the Spool: Rotate the captive wood-grain or knurled release nut on the front of the spool counter-clockwise. Pull the spool straight off the frame.
-
Clean the Surfaces: Use warm, soapy water and a cloth to wipe down the internal frame and the back of the spool. Pay close attention to the spool spindle and the bearing race.
-
Dry Thoroughly: Ensure all components are completely dry before applying any lubricants. Trapped moisture can lead to oxidation or "milky" grease.
Troubleshooting and Repairs
1. Sticky or Inconsistent Drag
The Ultralite DD features a semi-sealed carbon fiber disc drag. If the drag feels "jerky," it is likely due to debris between the spool and the drag housing.
-
The Fix: Inspect the drag surface on the frame. Wipe the carbon disc area with a dry cotton swab to remove dust. Do not apply heavy grease to the carbon fiber discs; they are designed to run nearly dry or with a microscopic film of specialized drag grease. If the drag still feels rough, apply one tiny drop of light reel oil to the main spindle.
2. Retrieve Direction Change (RHW to LHW)
If you find the reel is clicking in the wrong direction or the drag isn't engaging when you pull line, the one-way bearing needs to be flipped.
-
The Fix: Locate the one-way bearing (usually a needle-bearing cylinder) inside the spool hub or on the spindle. Note its orientation. Carefully remove it, flip it over, and re-seat it. Test the drag engagement before fully reassembling.
3. Handle Stiffness
A stiff handle usually indicates that grit has worked its way into the handle's pivot point.
-
The Fix: Use a small screwdriver to remove the screw on the handle cap. Remove the handle and the small washers. Clean the handle post thoroughly. Apply a small amount of synthetic reel grease to the post and reassemble. Do not over-tighten the screw, as this will bind the handle.
4. Weak "Click" Sound
The Ultralite DD uses a small spring-loaded clicker to provide audible feedback. If the reel becomes silent or the click is muffled, the clicker is likely stuck.
-
The Fix: Look for the small metal pawl (clicker) on the frame. Press it with a finger to see if it moves freely. If it is stuck, apply a drop of reel oil to the spring mechanism and work it back and forth with a toothpick until it snaps back quickly.
Reassembly and Lubrication
Once the reel is clean and the specific issue is addressed, follow these steps to ensure longevity:
-
Lubricate the Spindle: Apply a very thin layer of grease to the main spindle on the frame.
-
Seat the Spool: Align the spool with the frame and slide it on. You should hear a light "click" as the gears mesh.
-
Secure the Nut: Tighten the captive release nut clockwise. It should be finger-tight; never use pliers.
-
Final Test: Back the drag off to the lowest setting and spin the spool. Gradually increase the drag to the maximum setting to ensure the transition is smooth and the "stop" is firm.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity
-
Rinse After Use: If used in brackish water, always rinse the reel in fresh water.
-
Store Backed Off: When storing the reel for the season, turn the drag knob to the lowest setting. This prevents the drag washers from becoming compressed and losing their range of motion.
-
Avoid Over-Lubrication: Excessive grease attracts sand. A "thin film" is always better than a "glob."
If the drag continues to fail after these steps, the internal sealed cartridge may have failed. In that case, contact an authorized Hardy service center for a cartridge replacement.
