The Hardy Ultralite FW DD (Featherweight Disc Drag) series is a masterclass in minimalist engineering. Because it is designed to be as light as possible, it lacks the "tank-like" casing of heavier reels, making regular maintenance essential to prevent grit from compromising the tight tolerances.

This guide covers basic maintenance, deep cleaning, and troubleshooting for the drag system and retrieve direction.

Required Tools and Supplies

Before you begin, clear a clean, well-lit workspace. Use a magnetic tray for small parts if available.

  • Isopropyl Alcohol (90%): For removing old, Gunked-up grease.

  • Synthetic Reel Grease: (e.g., Penn Precision or Cal’s Universal).

  • Light Reel Oil: (e.g., Ardent Reel Butter or sewing machine oil).

  • Soft-Bristle Toothbrush: For scrubbing the gear teeth.

  • Microfiber Cloth: For wiping down the frame and spool.

  • Small Flathead Screwdriver: Only needed for handle or clicker plate adjustments.

Step 1: Basic Disassembly and Cleaning

Most performance issues in the FW DD series stem from fine silt or sand entering the gap between the spool and the frame.

  1. Remove the Spool: Turn the central textured cap on the front of the spool counter-clockwise until it releases. Pull the spool straight off the spindle.

  2. Inspect the Spindle: Wipe the spindle (the main shaft on the frame) with a cloth dampened with alcohol. Look for any scoring or metal shavings.

  3. Clean the Internal Rim: Use the toothbrush to clear out the "teeth" on the inside of the spool where the clicker engages. If these are filled with dirt, your reel will sound "muffled."

  4. Dry Thoroughly: Ensure no alcohol remains before applying new lubricants.

Step 2: Servicing the Drag System

The FW DD features a semi-sealed carbon fiber disc drag. While you shouldn't submerge the drag housing in solvent, the surface areas require occasional attention.

Maintenance Table

Component Action Lubricant Type
Main Spindle Wipe clean and apply a thin film. Light Synthetic Grease
O-Rings Inspect for cracks; wipe with a tiny drop of oil. Light Reel Oil
Drag Washers Wipe with a dry cloth. Do not soak in oil. None (Run Dry)
One-Way Bearing Apply one drop if retrieve feels stiff. Light Reel Oil

Warning: Excessive grease on the carbon drag washers will cause the drag to "stutter" or lose its maximum setting. Keep these surfaces as clean and dry as possible.

Step 3: Changing Retrieve Direction (LHW to RHW)

The FW DD is reversible. If your reel is spinning the wrong way or the drag is engaging in the wrong direction, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the spool from the frame.

  2. Locate the one-way bearing (the silver or black octagonal sleeve) sitting on the spindle or housed in the center of the spool.

  3. Carefully slide the bearing out.

  4. Flip the bearing over and slide it back into its housing.

  5. Re-seat the spool and test the tension. The drag should now engage when pulling line off the reel in the opposite direction.

Step 4: Troubleshooting Common Issues

The Reel "Screams" or Squeaks

This is usually caused by a bone-dry spindle. Remove the spool and apply a very small amount of grease to the spindle base. A little goes a long way; if grease starts leaking out of the frame, you’ve used too much.

The Drag Won't Tighten

This often happens if the drag knob's internal threads have become fouled.

  • Back the drag knob all the way out (to the "minus" setting).

  • Use compressed air to blow out any dust between the knob and the frame.

  • If the issue persists, the internal wave spring may be fatigued, requiring a professional part replacement from Hardy.

Gritty Feel When Winding

Check the handle assembly. The FW DD handle is exposed to the elements. Drop a single bead of oil into the gap between the handle knob and the spindle arm. Spin it rapidly to distribute the oil.

Reassembly and Final Check

  1. Slide the spool back onto the frame, ensuring it seats fully against the base.

  2. Tighten the center cap until finger-tight. Do not overtighten with tools; the O-ring provides the necessary tension to keep it from backing off.

  3. Pull five to ten yards of line off the reel against the drag to "set" the washers.

  4. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth to remove any stray grease fingerprints.
