The Hardy JLH Ultralite is a classic click-and-pawl fly reel known for its lightweight construction and simple, elegant internal mechanism. Because it relies on a traditional spring-and-pawl system rather than a sealed disc drag, most "repairs" are actually deep-cleaning tasks or simple part replacements.

1. Required Tools and Preparation

Before opening the reel, ensure you have a clean, light-colored workspace to prevent losing small springs or screws.

  • Tools: A small flat-head screwdriver, a soft-tooth brush, and a lint-free cloth.

  • Supplies: High-quality reel grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Hardy's own) and light machine oil.

  • Cleaning Agent: Warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh degreasers that can strip the anodized finish.

2. Disassembly Procedure

The JLH Ultralite is designed for quick field stripping.

  1. Remove the Spool: Press the quick-release latch on the front of the spool and pull the spool away from the frame.

  2. Inspect the Spindle: Check the main spindle for debris or dried grease.

  3. Access the Internal Drag: The click-and-pawl mechanism is located on the inside of the frame. It consists of a triangular pawl, a circular spring, and a brass adjuster screw.

3. Common Repairs and Troubleshooting

Weak Click or Losing Tension

This is usually caused by a "tired" spring or a worn pawl.

  • The Fix: Remove the small screw holding the pawl in place. Flip the pawl to use the unused side (most are symmetrical). If the spring has lost its tension, you can gently expand it by hand to increase the pressure it exerts on the pawl, though replacement springs are recommended for a permanent fix.

Grittiness During Rotation

Sand or dried salt often gets trapped between the spool and the frame.

  • The Fix: Submerge the frame and spool in warm, soapy water. Use the toothbrush to scrub the teeth of the gear (on the back of the spool) and the spindle housing. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry completely.

Changing Retrieve Direction (LHW to RHW)

The JLH is reversible.

  • The Fix: Notice the two pawls. One is engaged with the spring, and one is usually "parked" or facing away. To switch, move the spring so it engages the opposite pawl. Ensure the pawl is oriented so the flat side hits the gear teeth correctly for the desired direction.

4. Lubrication Points

Over-greasing is the most common mistake. Only a small amount is necessary.

  • The Spindle: Apply one drop of light oil. Do not use heavy grease here, as it can cause drag in cold weather.

  • The Pawl and Gear: Apply a very thin film of reel grease to the tips of the gear teeth on the spool.

  • The Spring: A tiny dab of grease where the spring contacts the pawl will reduce wear and dampen the "tinny" sound of the click.

5. Reassembly and Final Check

  1. Align the spool with the spindle.

  2. Depress the quick-release latch and slide the spool into place.

  3. Rotate the spool in both directions to ensure the "click" is consistent and the tension adjuster increases or decreases resistance properly.

  4. Wipe down the exterior with a cloth to remove any excess oil or fingerprints.

Maintenance Tip

To prevent the spring from taking a "set" (losing its memory), always back off the tension adjuster to the minimum setting when storing the reel for long periods.
