Hardy FORTUNA XDS 6000 thru 12000
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Fortuna XDS is a high-performance, saltwater-grade large arbor reel known for its "stop-a-train" drag system. Because these reels are built with tight tolerances and specialized seals to keep salt out, maintenance requires a steady hand and specific tools.
Tools Required
-
Torx T6 and T10 drivers
-
Flathead screwdriver (small/jeweler’s)
-
Calipers or needle-nose pliers
-
Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning)
-
Synthetic reel grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Cal’s)
-
Light machine oil (e.g., ReelX or Lucas Oil)
1. Basic Disassembly
-
Remove the Spool: Rotate the central captive release screw counter-clockwise. Pull the spool straight off the frame.
-
Inspect the O-Ring: Check the large rubber O-ring on the spool hub. If it is cracked or dry, the seal is compromised.
-
Access the Drag Housing: The Fortuna XDS uses a sealed carbon fiber disc system. On the frame side, you will see a cover plate held by small Torx screws.
2. Servicing the Drag System
The XDS drag is "sealed," but salt can still crust around the edges of the housing, causing the knob to stiffen.
-
Removal: Remove the three T6 screws securing the drag cover. Carefully lift the cover to reveal the carbon and stainless steel discs.
-
Cleaning: Use isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth to wipe the metal plates. Note: The carbon fiber discs should generally be kept dry. If they are glazed or gritty, wipe them lightly but do not soak them in solvent.
-
Lubrication: Apply a micro-thin layer of specialized drag grease to the metal washers only. If you use too much, the drag will "hydroplane" and lose its stopping power.
-
Reassembly: Stack the washers in the exact order they were removed. Ensure the keyed washers align with the flats on the main shaft.
3. The One-Way Bearing (Anti-Reverse)
If your reel is "slipping" or the handle spins backward, the one-way clutch bearing is the culprit.
-
Location: The bearing is housed within the central hub of the frame.
-
Cleaning: This bearing is sensitive. Do not use heavy grease here, as it will cause the rollers to stick and fail to engage.
-
Correction: Flush the bearing with alcohol to remove old gunk. Apply one drop of thin oil.
-
Direction: If you need to change the retrieve (Left-to-Right hand), flip the bearing over. Ensure the notched side seats correctly into the housing.
4. Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Gritty Drag Knob | Salt buildup under the knob | Remove the T10 center screw on the drag knob; clean threads and re-grease. |
| Spool Wobble | Loose spindle or worn O-ring | Tighten the main spindle screws; replace the spool hub O-ring. |
| Silent Retrieve | Broken or stuck clicker | Inspect the small spring-loaded plunger on the frame; clean out dried salt. |
| Reduced Drag Power | Oil/Grease on carbon discs | De-grease discs with alcohol; ensure no heavy oils have leaked into the housing. |
5. Reassembly and Storage
-
Sealing: Before closing the drag housing, ensure the perimeter seal is seated.
-
Tightening: Do not over-torque the T6 screws; they are small and can snap or strip easily.
-
Rinsing: After any saltwater use, even with a sealed reel, back the drag off completely and rinse with cool fresh water.
-
Storage: Always store the reel with the drag set to the minimum. Leaving the drag cranked down for long periods can compress the washers and lead to "starting inertia" (the drag sticking when a fish first runs).
