The Hardy Fortuna Regent is a high-performance, saltwater-grade large arbor reel featuring a sealed carbon fiber disc brake system. Because the drag housing is factory-sealed to maintain its IPX8 waterproof rating, most "repairs" are actually intensive maintenance or part replacements rather than internal gear calibration.

Pre-Repair Essentials

Before opening the reel, ensure you have a clean, lint-free workspace. Saltwater reels are sensitive to internal contamination.

  • Tools Required: Hex key set (metric), small flathead screwdriver, isopropyl alcohol, and high-quality synthetic reel grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Cal’s).

  • Warning: Do not attempt to force open the sealed drag canister. If the internal seals are breached, the reel’s waterproof integrity is compromised, and it typically requires factory service.

1. Spool Removal and Basic Inspection

  1. Release the Spool: Turn the large gold central locking nut counter-clockwise. Pull the spool straight off the frame.

  2. Clean the Spindle: Use a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol to remove old grease and salt buildup from the main spindle and the interior of the spool hub.

  3. Check the O-Rings: Inspect the rubber O-ring on the spindle and the spool cap. If they appear cracked or flattened, they must be replaced to prevent water ingress.

2. Troubleshooting the Drag System

The Fortuna Regent uses a multi-pad carbon fiber system. If the drag feels "jerky" or inconsistent:

  1. Surface Cleaning: Wipe the exposed face of the drag hub on the frame and the mating surface inside the spool. Even a single grain of sand here will cause "stuttering."

  2. Regulating Tension: If the drag knob is difficult to turn, apply a tiny drop of synthetic oil to the threads beneath the drag adjustment knob.

  3. The "Silent" Issue: If the incoming or outgoing clicker has stopped working, the small spring-loaded plunger (clicker tooth) is likely stuck or broken.

    • Locate the clicker housing on the inside of the spool.

    • Remove the retaining screw.

    • Clean the spring and plunger.

    • Apply a light coat of grease and reassemble.

3. Reversing the Retrieve (Left/Right Hand)

The Fortuna Regent is directional. To change the wind direction:

  1. Remove the spool.

  2. Locate the one-way bearing carrier on the main spindle.

  3. Remove the retaining ring (usually a screw-down cap or a spring clip depending on the specific production year).

  4. Slide the one-way bearing out, flip it over, and slide it back in.

  5. Crucial: Ensure the bearing is seated fully. If it sits crooked, the spool will wobble or bind.

4. Lubrication Points

Avoid over-greasing, as this attracts sand and grit which acts like sandpaper on the finish.

  • Main Spindle: Apply a very thin film of grease.

  • Handle Knob: If the handle squeaks, back out the small screw at the end of the knob, slide the knob off, clean the post, and apply one drop of oil.

  • Drag Knob Threads: Use a heavy-duty marine grease to prevent the threads from seizing over time due to salt crystallization.

5. Reassembly and Testing

  1. Slide the spool back onto the frame, ensuring it clicks into place over the drive lugs.

  2. Tighten the gold locking nut until hand-tight.

  3. Test the Drag: Set the drag to its lowest setting and pull line; it should be smooth. Dial it to the maximum setting to ensure the "stop" is firm.

  4. Rinse: After any repair or saltwater use, always rinse the reel in cool fresh water with the drag tightened fully (to keep water out of the seals), then loosen the drag completely for storage to prevent the carbon discs from compressing and taking a "set."
