Hardy FLY UDLA ALL SIZES
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Ultradisc UDLA (Ultra Disc Lightweight Disc) is a high-performance, mid-to-large arbor fly reel known for its innovative frame design and multi-pad disc drag system. Because of its skeletonized frame and semi-enclosed line guard, maintenance is straightforward but requires a delicate touch.
1. Essential Tools & Preparation
Before you begin, ensure you have a clean, lint-free workspace.
-
Torx T6 or T8 driver (depending on the specific production year).
-
Small Flathead Screwdriver (for the spindle screw).
-
High-quality Reel Grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Hardy’s proprietary grease).
-
Reel Oil (lightweight synthetic oil).
-
Isopropyl Alcohol and cotton swabs for cleaning.
2. Basic Disassembly
Most common issues (grittiness, clicking sounds) can be fixed with a basic teardown.
-
Remove the Spool: Press the quick-release lever on the front of the spool and pull it away from the frame.
-
Inspect the Spindle: Check the main shaft for debris or dried grease.
-
Access the Drag Housing: On the UDLA, the drag system is housed within the hub. To access it, you must remove the retaining screw at the center of the spindle.
3. Common Repairs & Troubleshooting
Issue: Drag Feel is "Jerky" or Inconsistent
The UDLA uses a multi-pad carbon fiber drag system. If it’s sticking, it usually means moisture or salt has entered the housing.
-
The Fix: Remove the drag plates. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol to remove any glaze or dirt.
-
Note: These are "dry" drag systems. Do not apply heavy grease to the carbon discs unless they appear bone-dry, in which case a micro-drop of Cal’s Universal Drag Grease is acceptable.
Issue: Changing Retrieve Direction (LHW to RHW)
-
Remove the spool.
-
Unscrew the spindle cover/cap using a flathead screwdriver or the provided tool.
-
Remove the One-Way Bearing (the small roller clutch).
-
Flip the bearing over and re-insert it.
-
Re-tighten the cap and test the clicker direction.
Issue: Excessive Noise or Grinding
Because the UDLA has a minimalist frame, it is susceptible to "frame rub" if dropped or if the spindle nut loosens.
-
The Fix: Check the alignment of the spool. If the spool is wobbling, tighten the internal spindle screw. If the frame is bent (common with ultra-lightweight alloys), it may require professional straightening from a Hardy authorized service center.
4. Lubrication Points
To keep the UDLA running smoothly, follow this "Less is More" map:
| Component | Lubricant Type | Action |
| Main Spindle | Reel Grease | Apply a very thin film to the shaft. |
| One-Way Bearing | Light Reel Oil | One drop only. Too much oil will cause the drag to slip. |
| Handle Pivot | Light Reel Oil | Drop into the gap between the handle and the arm. |
| Spool Release | Light Reel Oil | Ensure the spring-loaded lever moves freely. |
5. Reassembly & Storage
-
Slide the spool back onto the frame until you hear a distinct click.
-
Back off the drag: When storing the reel for a long period, turn the drag knob to its lowest setting. This prevents the carbon pads from compressing and losing their "memory" or smoothness.
⚠️ Warning: The UDLA uses very small screws to maintain its "Ultra Light" status. Do not over-torque the screws, as the aluminum threads can strip easily. If a screw feels stuck, use a drop of penetrating oil and wait 10 minutes rather than forcing it.
