Hardy CLS 5000
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Cascapedia Large Arbour (CLS) 5000 is a high-performance disc-drag fly reel known for its "Color Line System" (CLS), which allows for quick spool changes via an identification ring. Due to its sophisticated synthetic and alloy components, maintenance focuses on cleanliness and lubrication of the drag housing.
Tools and Preparation
-
Small Flathead Screwdriver: For the spindle cap and retention screws.
-
Isopropyl Alcohol (90%): For cleaning old grease and grit.
-
Synthetic Reel Grease: (e.g., Penn Precision or Hardy-specific grease).
-
Light Reel Oil: For the spindle and clicker.
-
Microfiber Cloth.
Step 1: Spool Removal and Basic Cleaning
-
Release the Spool: Locate the sliding release latch on the front of the spool face. Slide it and lift the spool away from the frame.
-
Inspect the CLS Rings: Remove the colored identification rings. Check for cracks in the plastic. Wipe the interior of the spool with a dry cloth to remove any trapped sand or salt.
-
Clean the Frame: Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean the inner circumference of the frame where the spool sits.
Step 2: Servicing the Spindle and Bearings
The spindle is the heart of the reel’s rotation. If the reel feels "crunchy," the issue is likely here.
-
Remove the Spindle Cap: On the back of the reel, unscrew the central cap.
-
Lubrication: Apply one drop of light oil to the main spindle shaft. Do not over-oil, as excess oil can migrate into the drag surface and cause slippage.
-
Check the One-Way Bearing: The CLS uses a needle bearing for the anti-reverse. If the reel spins freely in both directions, the bearing is likely contaminated. Clean it with alcohol and apply a very thin film of grease—too much grease can cause the "dogs" in the bearing to stick in cold weather.
Step 3: Drag System Maintenance
The CLS features a sealed carbon fiber disc drag. While "sealed," it still requires inspection for moisture ingress.
-
Accessing the Drag: On the back of the frame, there are usually three small screws holding the drag housing cover. Remove these carefully.
-
Inspection: Check the carbon discs. They should be dry and free of gritty debris.
-
Reassembly: If the drag feels jerky, wipe the discs with a lint-free cloth. Note that these are "dry" drag systems; adding grease to the carbon discs will significantly reduce the maximum drag pressure.
Step 4: Directional Conversion (Left to Right Hand Retrieve)
If you need to change the wind direction:
-
Remove the spool.
-
Locate the central bearing housing on the spindle.
-
Remove the retaining clip (e-clip) using your screwdriver.
-
Flip the one-way clutch bearing over.
-
Re-seat the bearing and replace the retaining clip.
Reassembly and Testing
-
Seating the Spool: Align the spool with the spindle and press down until the latch clicks firmly.
-
Drag Test: Tighten the drag knob fully and pull line to ensure smooth engagement. Back it off to the minimum setting to ensure there is no "startup inertia" or sticking.
-
Storage: Always store the reel with the drag tension completely loosened to prevent the compression of the internal washers, which can lead to permanent flat spots and jerky performance.
