Hardy ASR CASSETTE 9000
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Ultralite ASR (Ambidextrous Spool Release) 9000 is a high-performance cassette fly reel designed primarily for heavy freshwater and light saltwater use (Salmon, Steelhead, and Pike). While its cassette system is revolutionary for quick line changes, the mechanical complexity introduces specific maintenance and repair needs.
## Common Repair & Maintenance Issues
1. ASR Switch & Locking Mechanism
The most common issue with the ASR series involves the sliding spool release switch.
-
The Issue: The switch can become "gritty" or stuck due to salt crystallization or fine sand entering the sliding track. If forced, the internal locking lugs can shear or fail to engage the polycarbonate cassette.
-
The Fix: Do not force the switch. Flush the mechanism with warm freshwater while toggling the switch gently. Apply a tiny drop of low-viscosity reel oil (like Hardy Reel Oil) to the slider track.
2. Drag System Stutter (Jerky Drag)
The 9000 model features a robust disc drag, but it is not entirely immune to the elements.
-
The Issue: Inconsistent "pulsing" when a fish runs. This is often caused by moisture or old, thickened grease trapped between the carbon fiber and stainless steel discs.
-
The Fix: Access the drag stack (refer to the schematic for the 9000 size). Clean the discs with a lint-free cloth. If the drag is "dry" type, keep it clean; if it requires lubrication, use only a microscopic film of Cal’s Universal Reel Grease.
-
Pro Tip: Always back the drag knob off to the minimum setting when storing the reel to prevent the washers from compressing and taking a "set."
3. Polycarbonate Cassette Warping or Cracking
The 9000 size carries a lot of line weight and backing tension.
-
The Issue: High-tension backing (especially GSP/Gel Spun) can exert immense inward pressure. On the larger 9000 cassettes, this can lead to slight warping or hairline cracks near the hub, making the spool difficult to seat on the frame.
-
The Fix: Inspect cassettes annually for "crazing" (small spider-web cracks). If a cassette is warped, it must be replaced; they cannot be safely reshaped. Avoid over-tightening backing.
4. Clicker Failure
-
The Issue: The "purr" of the reel disappears or becomes muted. In some ASR models, the clicker housing is integrated; if the plastic pawl wears down, the sound ceases.
-
The Fix: Check the small metal or plastic clicker leaf spring. If bent, it can often be gently reshaped with needle-nose pliers. If the pawl is completely worn, a replacement part from an authorized Hardy dealer (or Mike’s Reel Repair) is required.

## Step-by-Step Servicing Guide
Cleaning & Salt Removal
-
Remove the Cassette: Slide the ASR switch and pull the cassette free.
-
Soak: Submerge the frame and the cassette (with line) in lukewarm freshwater for 30 minutes. This dissolves salt trapped in the line and the locking lugs.
-
Dry: Air dry completely. Do not use a hairdryer on high heat, as it can deform the polycarbonate cassette.
Lubrication Points
-
Main Spindle: Apply a light coat of grease to the spindle where the spool rotates.
-
O-Rings: The ASR 9000 uses a small O-ring for tension; ensure it is supple. If cracked, replace it with a standard Nitrile O-ring of the same diameter.
-
Handle: Drop one drop of oil into the handle's oil port (if present) or at the base of the handle knob to ensure free rotation.
Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Wobble during retrieve | Spool not seated / Bent spindle | Re-seat spool; check if ASR switch "clicked" |
| Switch won't move | Salt / Sand buildup | Warm water flush; do not pry with tools |
| Silent retrieve | Broken clicker pawl | Replace internal clicker spring/pawl |
| Grinding sound | Bearing contamination | Clean bearings with solvent; re-oil |
Warning: The Hardy ASR 9000 contains small springs and retention clips. When disassembling the drag knob or the ASR switch mechanism, work inside a shallow tray to prevent losing "ping-away" parts.
