Hardy ASR Cassette Series
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy ASR (Aylsham Spool Release) series is a high-performance cassette reel system. Because these reels utilize a complex switch mechanism and a multi-disc drag, they are prone to issues caused by grit, salt, or dried factory grease.
This guide covers basic maintenance, common mechanical fixes, and the retrieval conversion process.
Required Tools and Supplies
-
Isopropyl Alcohol (90%+): For degreasing.
-
Synthetic Reel Grease: For the main shaft and gear teeth.
-
Light Reel Oil: For the one-way bearing and clicker.
-
Cotton Swabs and a Soft Brush: For detail cleaning.
-
Flathead Screwdriver: Small precision size.
Phase 1: Routine Cleaning and Debris Removal
Most "failures" in the ASR series are simply caused by sand or salt crystallizing inside the spool release switch.
-
Remove the Cassette: Slide the ASR switch toward the center of the reel and pull the spool away from the frame.
-
The Switch Flush: If the switch feels crunchy or sticks, do not force it. Submerge the frame in warm, soapy water and toggle the switch repeatedly.
-
Drying: Use compressed air or a soft cloth to dry the internal spring channel of the switch. Apply a single drop of light oil to the switch's sliding track.
Phase 2: Drag System and One-Way Bearing
If your drag is slipping or the reel is "free-spooling" in both directions, the one-way bearing (clutch) is likely fouled or installed incorrectly.
Accessing the Internal Assembly
-
Unscrew the Drag Knob counter-clockwise until it comes off the frame.
-
Carefully remove the retaining clip or threaded cover (depending on the specific ASR model year) located inside the spool housing.
-
Slide the Main Shaft and Bearing Housing out of the frame.
Cleaning the Bearing
-
Remove the silver one-way bearing.
-
Clean the bearing and the shaft with isopropyl alcohol to remove old, thickened grease.
-
Note: One-way bearings require very little lubrication. If you over-grease them, the "clutch" will not engage, and the reel will spin freely in both directions. Use a single drop of light oil only.
Phase 3: Left-Hand to Right-Hand Conversion
The ASR is factory-set for Left-Hand Wind (LHW). To reverse the wind:
-
Remove the spool and the main shaft cover.
-
Locate the One-Way Bearing on the center shaft.
-
Flip the bearing over and reinsert it.
-
Reassemble the housing. If the reel now retrieves in the opposite direction with drag resistance, the conversion is successful.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Spool won't lock | Grit in ASR switch or cassette not seated. | Clean switch track; ensure cassette is flush before toggling. |
| Silent Retrieve | Clicker leaf spring is bent or broken. | Gently bend the metal clicker tongue back toward the gear. |
| Dragging/Grinding | Sand behind the drag knob. | Remove drag knob, flush threads, and re-grease. |
| Weak Drag Tension | Glazed carbon washers. | Wipe carbon discs with a dry cloth; do not oil them. |
Pro-Tips for Longevity
Avoid Over-Tightening: When storing the reel for the off-season, back the drag knob off completely. Leaving the drag engaged can compress the washers and lead to "flat spots" in the tension.
Cassette Care: Inspect the plastic O-rings on your cassettes. If the cassette wobbles, the O-ring may be dry. A tiny amount of grease on the O-ring ensures a snug fit against the metal spool carrier.
If the internal drag housing appears cracked or the ASR switch spring has snapped, these parts are not user-serviceable and will require a shipment to an authorized Hardy service center for a press-fit replacement.
