The Hardy Anniversary Range of fly reels—celebrated for their classic "Perfect" style aesthetics and modern precision—requires careful handling to maintain their heirloom quality. Whether you are performing a seasonal cleaning or a full teardown, this guide covers the essentials for the 1902, 1912, and 1920 reproduction models.

## Schematic Overview: The Internal Mechanism

The Anniversary Range typically utilizes the Mark II Check system. Unlike modern disc drags, these rely on a spring-and-pawl mechanism that provides that iconic Hardy "click."

Typical Assembly Order

  1. The Retention Screw: A reverse-threaded screw (on many models) that holds the spool to the frame.

  2. The Spool: Features the integrated brass gear (winding plate).

  3. The Check System: Located inside the frame, consisting of the pawl, the spring, and the regulator screw.

  4. The Bushing: The central spindle assembly that allows for smooth rotation.

## Step-by-Step Repair & Maintenance

1. Disassembly

  • The Screw: Use a precision-ground flathead screwdriver. Note that Hardy often uses left-hand threads for the center screw to prevent it from loosening during a fish's run. Turn clockwise to loosen if it is a reverse thread.

  • Removing the Spool: Gently pull the spool away from the frame. If it feels stuck, do not pry; apply a drop of penetrating oil to the spindle and wait.

2. Servicing the Check System

  • Inspection: Look for rounded edges on the Check Pawl (H-03). If the click sounds "mushy," the pawl likely needs replacement or sharpening with a fine jeweler's file.

  • Tension: If the drag is too light even at the highest setting, the Check Spring (H-04) may have lost its "set." You can gently widen the spring arms, but be cautious—blue steel can snap if overstressed.

3. Cleaning & Lubrication

  • Cleaning: Use a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water to remove old grease and grit. Avoid harsh chemical solvents that can strip the "spitfire" or anodized finish.

  • Lubrication: * Apply a light synthetic reel grease to the brass gear teeth.

    • Apply a single drop of fine reel oil to the spindle and the pawl pivot point.

Note on Lubrication: Less is more. Over-greasing a Hardy reel will attract grit, which acts like sandpaper on the soft brass internals.

## Common Troubleshooting

  • The "Wobble": If the spool has lateral play, the brass bushing in the center of the spool may be worn. This usually requires a professional machinist to "re-bush" the reel.

  • Grinding Noise: Usually indicates sand or salt crystals behind the winding plate. Perform a deep clean immediately to prevent scoring the frame.

  • Frozen Regulator: The Regulator Screw (H-05) can seize if stored in damp conditions. Apply a drop of penetrating oil from the inside of the frame and allow it to sit for 24 hours before attempting to turn.

## Technical Specifications

For those matching parts or calculating tolerances:

  • Material: 6061 Bar-stock Aluminum (Frames) / Naval Brass (Internals).

  • Thread Pitch: Most Hardy Anniversary models utilize Imperial (BSF/BA) threading rather than Metric.

  • Finish: Anodized or "Spitfire" (polished) finish.

Warning: These reels are collectors' items. If a screw is stuck or a part seems seized, do not force it. Heat and specialized tools may be required to prevent "burring" the soft brass or aluminum.
