Technical Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TC (15 01) Left-Hand Model
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TC (Trolling Collection) is a left-hand retrieve reel specifically engineered for consistent depth control and heavy-duty trolling. As a 15 01 model, it features a mirrored internal drive system and a fully synchronized levelwind. Because the 6500TC is not a CT model, it utilizes an internal idler gear to drive the oscillation and line-tracking systems. Proper maintenance of these specific contact points is vital for ensuring the reel’s longevity and smooth operation under the strain of heavy lures.
Phase 1: Left-Hand Drive Disassembly
On the 15 01 model, remember that the handle nut is left-hand threaded; rotate it clockwise to remove. Once the handle and star drag are cleared, loosen the three thumb screws to remove the right-hand side plate (which contains the gear bridge).
-
Internal Access: Pull the spool assembly from the frame to reveal the Idler Gear seated on the frame's interior.
-
Cleaning: Use a specialized reel degreaser to strip away old, salt-crusted lubricants from the frame and the gear teeth.
Phase 2: Drive Train and Torque Management
The drive train in the 6500TC handles high-pressure loads during trolling. The main and pinion gears must be shielded from the heat and friction generated during long fights.
-
Component: Main Gear and Pinion Gear.
-
Lubrication: Apply a high-quality marine-grade grease to the teeth of both the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. Use a brush to ensure the grease is packed into the valleys of the gear teeth. This creates a protective film that prevents metal-on-metal galling when winching in high-drag trolling setups.
Phase 3: Synchronized System and Idler Gear Calibration
The 6500TC relies on a synchronized levelwind, meaning the line guide moves whenever the spool spins. This system is powered by a plastic idler gear that bridges the spool to the worm shaft.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Examine the plastic teeth of the Idler Gear for any signs of "mushrooming" or debris. Since this gear is constantly under load, it is a primary wear point.
-
The Worm Gear: Check the levelwind worm shaft for any grit that could stall the line guide.
-
Recommended Lubricant: For the Idler Gear and the Levelwind Worm Gear, apply Deuthlon oil.
-
Why Deuthlon: Standard greases are often too heavy for these parts, creating a "sluggish" feel. Deuthlon oil provides a high-performance, low-friction layer that protects the plastic idler teeth while ensuring the levelwind oscillates with zero hesitation. This is critical for maintaining an accurate line lay.
Phase 4: Final Reassembly and Spool Tension
-
Alignment: When reinserting the spool, ensure the gear on the spool end clicks into the Idler Gear.
-
Side Plate: Reattach the gear-side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Brake Check: Ensure the centrifugal brake race is dry and clean to allow for consistent spool control during deployment.
Maintenance Lubrication Summary
| Component | Lubricant Type | Maintenance Note |
| Main & Pinion Gears | Marine Grease | Coat teeth fully for load protection |
| Idler Gear | Deuthlon Oil | Prevents friction on synchronized plastic gears |
| Worm Gear (Levelwind) | Deuthlon Oil | Ensures smooth, rapid line oscillation |
| Spool Bearings | Light Oil | One drop per bearing for fast startup |
| Brake Race | Dry | Keep free of oil for consistent braking |
By utilizing Deuthlon oil on the synchronized components and high-pressure grease on the main drive, you ensure the Ambassadeur 6500TC 15 01 remains a precision instrument for high-stakes trolling.
