Expert Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500SSC (13 00) Silver Series

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500SSC is a specialized "Silver Series" edition known for its distinctive aesthetics and reliable synchronized levelwind system. As a 13 00 model, it utilizes a traditional frame design that prioritizes durability for coastal and freshwater applications. To keep this reel operating with its signature smoothness, a specific lubrication strategy is required—distinguishing between the high-torque drive gears and the high-speed oscillation components.

Preliminary Inspection and Disassembly

Before beginning the teardown, check the reel's free-spool performance. If the levelwind guide stutters, the issue likely resides in the idler gear or the worm shaft.

  1. Remove the Handle: Take off the handle nut retainer, the 10mm nut, and the handle arm.

  2. Side Plate Access: Back out the three bridge screws on the right-side plate. Carefully pull the plate away from the frame to expose the main gear stack.

  3. Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. This will provide clear access to the internal Idler Gear located on the interior of the left-side frame.

Step 1: Servicing the Drive Train (Main & Pinion)

The 6500SSC features a high-grade brass gear set designed for heavy cranking. These parts move at a lower RPM but under significantly higher pressure than other internal components.

  • Cleaning: Use a stiff brush and a degreasing agent to strip the Main Gear and Pinion Gear of all black or grey oxidized sludge.

  • Lubrication: Apply a consistent layer of high-viscosity grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease acts as a vital barrier against metal-on-metal wear, especially when the drag is hammered down during a fight.

Step 2: Levelwind and Idler Gear Calibration

Since the 6500SSC is a non-CT model, it features a synchronized levelwind. This means the Idler Gear (which bridges the spool to the levelwind) and the Worm Gear are constantly in motion during every cast.

  • Idler Gear Inspection: The plastic idler gear is a critical wear point. Check for any "hooked" teeth or debris caught in the cogs.

  • Lubrication: For the Idler Gear and the Levelwind Worm Gear, apply Deuthlon oil.

  • The Deuthlon Advantage: Unlike standard grease, Deuthlon oil provides an ultra-slick coating that doesn't "clog" the synchronized system. This allows the levelwind to track effortlessly across the spool, which is essential for maintaining casting distance on reels where the line guide moves during the cast.

Step 3: Spool Bearings and Centrifugal Brakes

The 6500SSC relies on a centrifugal brake system for cast control.

  • Brake Race: Ensure the brass ring inside the side plate is wiped completely clean and dry.

  • Bearings: Flush the spool bearings in a solvent bath until they spin for several seconds when flicked. Apply one drop of light oil—never grease—to ensure a fast startup speed.

Reassembly Protocol

Reinstall the spool, ensuring the white plastic gear on the spool end perfectly meshes with the Idler Gear. Reattach the side plate and tighten the screws in a triangular pattern to ensure even pressure. Finally, reinstall the drag stack, ensuring the spring washers are curved away from each other to provide maximum tension range.

Essential Lubrication Summary

Component Lubricant Choice Maintenance Detail
Main Gear Marine Grease Coat every tooth for protection
Pinion Gear Marine Grease Apply to teeth and yoke contact
Idler Gear Deuthlon Oil 2 drops to ensure smooth transfer
Worm Gear Deuthlon Oil Light coat to the spiral grooves
Spool Shaft Light Bearing Oil One drop on each end

By following this professional maintenance routine and utilizing Deuthlon oil on the synchronized components, you will significantly extend the life of the plastic gears in your Ambassadeur 6500SSC while maximizing its casting efficiency.
