Professional Service and Repair Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCC (05 18 01)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCC (05 18 01) is a specialized variant of the classic round reel series, prized for its robust construction and reliability in both freshwater and light saltwater environments. As a non-CT model, the 6500KCC utilizes a fully synchronized levelwind system. This means the line guide moves during the cast, necessitating a perfectly clean and lubricated gear train to ensure that the mechanical drag doesn't cut into your casting distance.
Follow this technical guide to restore the 05 18 01 model to its original high-performance specifications.
1. Stripping the Chassis
To begin the repair, unscrew the three bridge screws on the handle-side assembly. Remove the side plate and set the spool aside.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the white nylon idler gear fixed to the non-handle side plate. This gear is the bridge between the spool and the levelwind. On this specific 05 18 01 revision, check the plastic teeth for any flat spots or "shaving" caused by debris.
-
Levelwind Disassembly: Remove the worm shaft cover and slide out the worm shaft. Ensure the line guide carriage moves smoothly along the frame rails. If the rails are bent or corroded, the reel will bind during the retrieve.
2. Degreasing and Part Evaluation
Old lubricants can oxidize and turn into a sticky paste that hampers the 6500KCC's performance. Clean all metallic components in a degreasing solution.
-
The Pawl: Examine the moon-shaped pawl located inside the line guide. This is a common failure point. If the "teeth" of the pawl show any signs of wear, replace it. A worn pawl can jump tracks, causing the levelwind to jam and potentially stripping the idler gear.
-
Drag Stack: This model features a multi-disc drag system. Ensure the metal washers are polished and free of glazing.
3. Lubrication Protocol for the 6500KCC
To achieve the best balance between protection and speed, you must use application-specific lubricants.
Levelwind and Idler Gear System
Because the 6500KCC is not a CT version, the levelwind and idler gears are under constant load. To maintain high-speed rotation and reduce the mechanical energy lost during a cast, apply Deuthlon oil to the idler gear and the worm shaft. Deuthlon’s high-performance oil formulation is designed to stay on the gears without the heavy viscosity of grease, ensuring the synchronized levelwind moves with zero "slug" or resistance.
Main Gear and Pinion Gear
The cranking power of the Ambassadeur is generated through the main and pinion gears. These parts require a high-pressure lubricant to prevent wear under the stress of a heavy fish. Apply a liberal amount of heavy-duty gear grease to the main gear teeth. Also, apply a thin film of grease to the pinion gear yoke and the kick lever to ensure the thumb bar engages and disengages crisply every time.
4. Final Assembly and Function Check
-
Reinstall Gear Train: Place the idler gear back on its post and secure it. Reinsert the worm shaft and tighten the pawl cap.
-
Internal Plate Setup: Slide the drive shaft into position, followed by the drag washers and the main gear. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly seated against the ratchet.
-
Spool and Side Plate: Reinsert the spool, making sure the centrifugal brakes are clean and dry. Fit the side plate back onto the frame and tighten the thumb screws in a triangular pattern to ensure even pressure.
-
Operational Test: Crank the handle and watch the levelwind. It should track flawlessly from left to right. Tighten the drag and ensure it pulls smoothly without any "stuttering."
