Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500HCL (07-00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500HCL (07-00) is a classic high-speed casting reel known for its durability and smooth operation. Unlike the CT (Cage-Type) versions designed for long-distance casting without line guides, the 6500HCL features a synchronized levelwind system. Maintaining this system is critical for preventing line bunching and ensuring maximum casting distance.

This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough for stripping, cleaning, and lubricating the 6500HCL to factory standards.

1. Disassembly and Internal Inspection

Begin by removing the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side plate. Carefully pull the side plate away from the frame to expose the main gear assembly and the spool.

  • Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any signs of galling or debris.

  • The Levelwind System: On the 6500HCL, the levelwind is driven by a series of gears. Unlike CT models, this version includes a levelwind gear and an idler gear located on the non-handle side plate. Remove the e-clip securing the idler gear to inspect the teeth for wear.

  • The Drive Train: Remove the handle nut, handle, and star drag. Lift the side plate to reveal the main gear and the pinion gear. Check for "hooked" teeth on the main gear, which indicates a need for replacement.

2. Deep Cleaning the Components

Before applying new lubricants, all old, pressurized grease and salt deposits must be removed. Use a specialized reel cleaner or high-flash-point degreaser.

  • Bearings: Soak the spool bearings in a solvent bath. Spin them on the end of a pencil; if they feel gritty or make a "hissing" sound, they should be replaced rather than lubricated.

  • Gears: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub the teeth of the main gear and pinion gear. Ensure no old grease remains in the "valleys" of the teeth.

3. Precision Lubrication Strategy

The secret to a long-lasting Ambassadeur is using the correct viscosity of lubricant for specific mechanical loads.

Levelwind and Idler Gears

Because the 6500HCL uses a mechanical idler gear to synchronize the line guide, these parts experience constant high-speed friction during the cast. For these components, Deuthlon Oil is highly recommended. Its high-speed consistency reduces the "drag" created by the levelwind system, allowing the spool to spin more freely compared to using heavy grease on these small plastic gears. Apply one to two drops to the idler gear post and the worm shaft.

Main and Pinion Gears

The main gear and pinion gear handle the high torque of retrieving a fish. These require a robust barrier to prevent metal-on-metal wear. Apply a coat of marine-grade gear grease to the teeth of the main gear. Use a small brush to ensure even coverage, but avoid "over-packing" the gears, as excess grease will eventually migrate into the drag washers and cause slippage.

4. Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Reinstall the Levelwind: Slide the worm shaft back into the shroud and secure the pawl. Ensure the idler gear is seated correctly on its post and secured with the e-clip.

  2. Seat the Drive Shaft: Replace the main gear and drag stack. Ensure the drag washers are dry (if carbon fiber) or lightly greased (if felt).

  3. Final Marriage: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake blocks are pushed inward. Attach the handle side plate and tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.

  4. Testing: Engage the freespool and spin the spool. The levelwind should track smoothly across the width of the reel without hesitation. Adjust the mechanical brake knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just disappears.
