Expert Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CS Mag (Foot Number 17 01)

The Ambassadeur 6500CS Mag 17 01 is a precision instrument designed for surf casting and long-distance angling. While similar to the 17 00 series, the 17 01 designation often indicates subtle refinements in the braking plate or spool shim configurations. Maintaining this reel requires a balance of protecting the heavy-duty drive train and ensuring the "Mag" braking system remains responsive.

Tools for the 17 01 Service

  • Wrench: 10mm (for handle nut removal).

  • Screwdrivers: Fine-tip flathead and Phillips.

  • Cleaning: Specialized reel cleaner or high-purity isopropyl alcohol.

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Oil (for speed) and a high-adhesion gear grease (for power).

Step 1: Handle and Drag Stack Removal

Remove the handle nut retainer and the 10mm nut. Lift the handle and the star drag wheel. Underneath, you will encounter the IAR (Instant Anti-Reverse) sleeve and a series of spring washers. Lay these out in the exact order of removal. In the 17 01 model, these washers are critical for maintaining the specific drag curve of the Carbon Matrix system.

Step 2: Side Plate and Magnet Calibration

Unscrew the three thumb screws on the right side plate and remove it.

  • Magnetic Brake Inspection: On the left side plate (non-drive side), you will see the adjustable magnetic tray. Move the external slider to ensure the magnets move freely toward and away from the spool's position.

  • Cleaning: Use a dry cotton swab to wipe the magnetic surfaces. Any metallic dust or salt crust here will interfere with the magnetic field.

  • The Spool: Pull the spool out. Inspect the spindle ends for any burrs or polish issues that could create friction.

Step 3: Drive Train Deep Clean

Separate the gear carrier from the right side plate.

  1. Main Gear: Remove the main gear and the drag washers. Use a degreaser to strip away all old, contaminated lubricant.

  2. Pinion Gear: The pinion gear sits within the yoke. Ensure the two yoke springs are under equal tension and the gear itself is free of debris.

  3. One-Way Bearing: Clean the IAR bearing inside the side plate. To prevent "slipping," this bearing must never be greased; it should remain dry or have a microscopic film of very light oil.

Step 4: Levelwind and Idler System

Because the 6500CS Mag features a synchronized levelwind, the worm gear rotates during the cast. This is a high-friction zone that demands specific lubrication.

  1. Remove the worm shaft from its housing.

  2. Clean the "cross-wrap" grooves of the worm gear thoroughly.

  3. Inspect the Idler Gear (the gear that transfers power from the spool to the levelwind). Ensure no sand or grit is embedded in the nylon teeth.

Step 5: Strategic Lubrication (The Deuthlon Method)

To optimize the 17 01 for maximum distance and smooth retrieval, apply lubricants based on the component's role:

  • Levelwind & Idler Gears: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm gear and the teeth of the idler gears. This specialized oil provides a high-film-strength barrier without the "tackiness" of grease. This allows the levelwind to move with minimal resistance during the cast, which is essential for the Mag series.

  • Main & Pinion Gears: Apply a premium gear grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear. Use a small brush to ensure even coverage. This protects the brass-on-steel contact points and provides the smooth, powerful feel the Ambassadeur is known for.

  • Spool Bearings: After a thorough solvent soak, add one drop of light high-speed oil to each bearing.

Step 6: Reassembly and Function Check

  1. Reinstall the worm gear and line carriage, securing them with the side clips.

  2. Place the pinion gear and yoke back into the drive bridge.

  3. Seat the main gear and drag stack onto the drive shaft.

  4. Fit the spool back into the frame and close the side plates.

  5. Final Test: Engage the drag and turn the handle to ensure the gears mesh perfectly. Move the Mag slider to ensure it doesn't rub against the spool flange at the "Max" setting.

Maintenance Breakdown

Part Action Lubricant
Worm Gear (Levelwind) Clean & Coat Deuthlon Oil
Idler Gears Brush & Coat Deuthlon Oil
Main Gear Grease Teeth High-Performance Grease
Pinion Gear Grease Teeth High-Performance Grease
Magnetic Tray Clean None (Dry)
Spindle Ends Wipe Trace Oil

By utilizing Deuthlon Oil on the synchronized components, you significantly reduce the mechanical drag on the Ambassadeur 6500CS Mag 17 01, ensuring it remains a top-tier casting tool for years.
