Technical Service Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CP Catfish Pro (18 01)
The Ambassadeur 6500CP Catfish Pro (18 01) is a heavy-duty variant of the classic 6500 chassis, specifically reinforced to handle the high-torque demands of trophy catfishing. Featuring a high-leverage power handle and a robust gear set, this 2018-era model is built for durability. To ensure this reel maintains its cranking power and casting efficiency, a strategic approach to lubrication and mechanical care is required.
Phase 1: Heavy-Duty Teardown
Given the environments where the Catfish Pro is typically utilized—often involving mud and high turbidity—a deep clean of the side plates is the first priority.
-
Side Plate Entry: Loosen the three oversized thumb screws on the handle-side plate. Pull the assembly away from the frame to expose the bridge.
-
Spool and Shaft: Remove the high-capacity spool. Inspect the spool's centrifugal brake weights and the drive gear that engages the levelwind system.
-
Drive Train Removal: Carefully lift the main gear and the Carbon Matrix drag stack from the drive shaft. Ensure the two yoke springs remain in their upright positions on the bridge plate.
Phase 2: Power Train Lubrication
The Catfish Pro is designed to pull heavy fish out of thick cover, placing immense pressure on the brass gear interface.
-
Primary Gear Protection: After stripping away old, contaminated lubricants, apply a generous coating of heavy-duty grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This grease provides the necessary film strength to prevent gear teeth deformation under maximum drag pressure and ensures the retrieve remains smooth and silent.
-
Drag System: The 18 01 model uses a specialized Carbon Matrix system. Ensure these washers are clean and flat. If you find any grit, wipe them down with a lint-free cloth to restore the smooth, non-stick drag performance essential for fighting large fish.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System Optimization
In the Catfish Pro series, the levelwind is synchronized to provide a consistent line lay and prevent line digging under high tension. To ensure this system doesn't create unnecessary drag during the cast, specific lubrication is required.
-
Worm Shaft Maintenance: Clean the spiral tracks of the worm shaft. Inspect the pawl for any wear caused by heavy line tension.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: The nylon idler gear transfers the spool's rotation to the levelwind. Ensure no debris is lodged in the gear teeth.
-
Performance Lubrication: To achieve maximum casting distance with heavy baits, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. This oil provides superior lubrication without the "stickiness" of grease, allowing the line guide to travel effortlessly across the frame even during high-velocity casts.
Phase 4: Bearing and Brake Calibration
The 6500CP utilizes stainless steel ball bearings that must be kept free of grit to ensure a fast spool startup.
-
Bearing Flushing: Soak the spool bearings in a solvent until they spin freely. Once dried, apply exactly one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each.
-
Brake Race Cleaning: Use a cotton swab to clean the internal brass brake ring. It must be free of oil and grease to ensure the centrifugal weights provide consistent back-pressure, preventing bird's nests when casting heavy lead sinkers.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing
-
Reinstall the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the drive pins engage the levelwind gears.
-
Side Plate Alignment: Align the handle-side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Mechanical Tension: Adjust the spool tension knob until the side-to-side play is just eliminated.
-
Operational Check: Engage the thumb bar to verify a smooth freespool. Turn the power handle to ensure the gears engage solidly and the levelwind tracks perfectly, fully optimized with Deuthlon oil and high-performance grease.
