Expert Service Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CL3 (08-01)
The Ambassadeur 6500CL3 (08-01) is a specialized evolution of the classic round reel design, featuring enhanced bearing support and a high-strength drag system. Because the 08-01 production run utilizes a synchronized levelwind, the mechanical drag produced by moving parts during the cast is a primary concern. This repair guide focuses on optimizing the interface between the high-torque drive train and the high-speed oscillation system.
Step 1: External Teardown and Cleaning
Begin by stripping the reel to its frame to ensure all old, oxidized lubricants are removed. The 6500CL3 is built with high-tolerance components that can be hindered by even microscopic debris.
-
Remove the Handle Assembly: Take off the handle nut, the handle itself, and the curved spring washers.
-
Access the Internals: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle-side plate and pull the assembly away from the frame.
-
Spool Extraction: Carefully slide the spool out. Take note of the position of the spool bearings and any underlying shims.
-
Component Degreasing: Clean the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft using a specialized solvent. A clean surface is mandatory for the new lubricants to bond correctly to the metal.
Step 2: Drive Train Lubrication and Protection
The "CL3" designation implies a robust gear set designed for heavy cranking. To protect these brass and steel parts from premature wear, a high-cling barrier is required.
-
Gear Mesh: After the parts are dry, apply a generous coating of gear grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This grease acts as a cushion, dampening the vibration of the gear teeth under load and preventing metal-on-metal galling.
-
Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR): Clean the IAR bearing located in the side plate. Use a dry cotton swab to remove old oil. If lubrication is needed, use only a tiny amount of very thin oil; grease will cause the anti-reverse to slip in colder conditions.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler System Optimization
In the 08-01 model, the levelwind moves back and forth during the cast. To prevent this from "choking" your casting distance, you must move away from heavy greases in this area.
-
Worm Shaft Inspection: Check the spiral grooves for any nicks that might catch the pawl.
-
Idler Gear Maintenance: The nylon idler gear is responsible for transferring energy from the spool to the levelwind. Ensure the teeth are clean and free of grit.
-
Friction Reduction: To achieve a lightning-fast spool release and smooth line distribution, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. This lubricant provides a high-speed film that does not create the "sludge" drag associated with traditional grease, allowing for significantly longer casts.
Step 4: Spool Bearing and Centrifugal Brake Care
The casting efficiency of the 6500CL3 is largely determined by the condition of the spool bearings and the friction of the brake weights.
-
Bearing Service: Flush the spool bearings with a degreaser until they spin without any grit. Once dry, add one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each.
-
Brake Race: The centrifugal brake weights must fly out and hit the brass race inside the side plate. Wipe this race with a clean, dry cloth to remove any oil residue. A clean race ensures consistent, predictable braking.
Step 5: Final Assembly and Calibration
-
Seat the Spool: Reinsert the spool into the frame. Ensure the pinion gear and yoke are properly aligned so the spool shaft slides into the gear center.
-
Secure the Side Plate: Align the side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Mechanical Tension: Adjust the spool tension knob until the spool has a tiny amount of side-to-side play. This prevents unnecessary pressure on the bearing faces.
-
Testing: Engage the thumb bar to verify a smooth freespool. Turn the handle to ensure the gears engage crisply and the levelwind tracks perfectly, fully serviced with Deuthlon oil and high-viscosity gear grease.
