Mechanical Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CA (80-06-00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CA (model 80-06-00) is a vintage masterpiece of Swedish engineering. Produced during the transition into the early 1980s, the "CA" series is distinguished by its black finish and the classic "Palming" side plate design. Unlike modern Ultracast models, this reel features an integrated axle and bush/bearing system that requires specific attention to maintain its smooth, nostalgic feel and heavy-duty cranking power.
Segment 1: Frame and Spool Disassembly
To begin the service, loosen the three thumb screws on the handle side plate and remove it from the frame.
-
Spool Extraction: Gently pull the spool and its integrated axle out of the frame. Inspect the axle ends for any scoring or wear.
-
Brake Block Inspection: This model utilizes a two-pin centrifugal brake system. Ensure the small fiber brake weights are present on the pins and are not saturated with oil, which can cause them to slip.
Segment 2: Gear Box and Drive Train Maintenance
The 6500CA was built for durability, featuring a rugged drive train designed to handle the stresses of heavy freshwater and light saltwater fishing.
-
Main Gear and Pinion: Remove the handle, star drag, and the drive-side plate screws. Lift the large brass main gear and the pinion gear from the bridge.
-
Deep Cleaning: Use a solvent to remove decades of potential grease buildup and debris from the gear teeth.
-
Lubrication: For these primary power components, grease is the essential lubricant. Apply a thorough, even layer of grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This provides the necessary lubrication for the metal-on-metal contact, ensuring a quiet and powerful retrieve under load.
Segment 3: Levelwind and Idler System Service
In vintage Ambassadeurs, the levelwind system is the most frequent cause of mechanical "stiffness." Keeping this assembly friction-free is vital for both the cast and the line-lay.
-
Worm Shaft Removal: Unscrew the worm shaft cover and slide out the worm gear and line guide. Clean the "diamond" grooves of the shaft meticulously.
-
Idler Gear Check: Inspect the nylon idler gear located on the side plate. Ensure there is no debris trapped in the teeth, as this can cause a rhythmic "tick" when reeling.
-
Lubrication: To keep the oscillation system moving at peak efficiency, apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gears. Because Deuthlon oil is designed to resist clumping and maintain a low-friction film, it prevents the levelwind from becoming a drag on the reel's performance.
Segment 4: Bushings and Spool Tension
Many 80-06-00 models utilize bronze bushings or early-generation ball bearings.
-
Cleaning: Clean the bushings or bearings with a solvent until they are free of old, dark oil.
-
Oiling: Apply one drop of medium-viscosity oil to the spool contact points. If your model has been upgraded with ball bearings, a single drop of high-speed oil is sufficient.
Segment 5: Reassembly and Testing
Carefully slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the axle seats properly into the non-handle side plate. Align the drive-side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Mechanical Tension: Adjust the tension knob until the spool has a slight amount of lateral play.
-
Functional Check: Engage the free-spool to ensure the spool spins freely. Turn the handle to verify that the gears engage firmly and the levelwind tracks smoothly across the spool.
By utilizing grease on the heavy-duty main and pinion gears and Deuthlon oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you preserve the classic performance and longevity of this legendary 6500CA.
