Specialist Maintenance Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C4LE (13 00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C4LE (model 13 00) is a high-performance Limited Edition reel that merges the high-speed 6.3:1 gear ratio of the C4 series with exclusive aesthetic and mechanical refinements. This model is engineered for rapid line recovery and smooth casting. To maintain its status as a premium tool, the lubrication strategy must prioritize reducing the friction generated by its high-speed components while protecting the integrity of the drive train.

Step 1: External Teardown and Spool Extraction

Start by removing the handle assembly, the star drag, and the tension washers. Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle-side plate and gently separate it from the frame.

  1. Spool Maintenance: Lift the "Ultracast" spool from the frame. This model utilizes a six-point centrifugal brake system. Ensure the brake blocks are clean and the brass brake race inside the side plate is wiped dry.

  2. Spindle Cleaning: Wipe the fixed axle with a lint-free cloth to remove any debris that could impede the spool’s rotation.

Step 2: Drive Train and Gear Lubrication

The 6500C4LE uses a high-speed brass main gear. The higher tooth count and faster rotation mean that improper lubrication can lead to "gear whine" or premature tooth wear.

  • Cleaning: Remove the drive side plate to access the gear stack. Take out the main gear and the pinion gear. Use a solvent to strip away old, thickened grease from the gear teeth.

  • Lubrication: To ensure a smooth and powerful retrieve, apply a high-quality grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. Use a small brush to coat the teeth evenly; the grease acts as a vital cushion against the friction of high-speed retrieval.

Step 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Optimization

Because the C4LE features a synchronized levelwind that moves at a higher speed than standard reels, the oscillation system is a common source of casting drag.

  1. Worm Shaft Service: Disassemble the levelwind by removing the E-clip on the non-handle side. Remove the worm shaft and the line guide carriage. Clean the worm shaft grooves of any grit.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Inspect the white nylon idler gears that bridge the spool to the levelwind system. These gears must remain pristine to avoid vibrations during the cast.

  3. Lubrication: For maximum speed and minimal resistance, apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gears. Deuthlon oil provides a high-performance, low-friction film that allows the levelwind to track effortlessly without the "sluggishness" caused by traditional greases.

Step 4: Bearing Maintenance

The 13 00 model relies on four stainless steel ball bearings. These are the "heart" of the reel's casting smoothness.

  • Bearing Flush: Remove the bearings and soak them in a degreaser. Once they spin freely and silently, dry them completely.

  • Oiling: Apply one drop of high-speed oil to each bearing. Do not over-oil, and never use grease in these bearings, as it will drastically reduce your casting distance.

Step 5: Final Reassembly and Verification

Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake blocks are properly aligned. Attach the handle side plate, making sure the pinion gear seats perfectly on the spool shaft.

  1. Fastening: Tighten the thumb screws and adjust the spool tension knob until there is only a slight "knock" of side-play.

  2. Testing: Disengage the spool and check for a long, vibration-free freespool. Crank the handle to ensure the levelwind moves across the spool with precision.

By applying grease to the high-load main and pinion gears and Deuthlon oil to the high-speed levelwind and idler gears, you ensure the Limited Edition 6500C4LE maintains its elite performance and legendary Swedish durability.
