Comprehensive Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 (1999–2009 Models)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 produced between 1999 and 2009 is a cornerstone of round reel engineering. Known for its "ultracast" design where the spool spins on a fixed axle, this era of the C3 is prized for its durability in both freshwater and light saltwater environments. To maintain its signature casting distance and cranking power, a systematic teardown and specific lubrication strategy are essential.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly and Handle Side Plate

Begin by backing off the star drag and removing the handle nut retainer screw, the handle nut, and the handle assembly. Carefully remove the spring washers (tension washers) located under the star drag.

  1. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame.

  2. Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the position of the centrifugal brake weights (brake blocks) on the spool's hub. Ensure these are not lost during cleaning.

Phase 2: The Drive Train and Gear Stack

The "guts" of the 6500C3 require meticulous cleaning to remove old, oxidized grease that can bridge the teeth of the gears and create a "crunchy" retrieve.

  • Main Gear and Pinion: Remove the main gear shaft and the main gear itself. Beneath the main gear, you will find the drag washer stack.

  • Cleaning: Use a specialized degreaser or isopropyl alcohol to strip all old lubricants from the gear teeth.

  • Lubrication Strategy: * Apply a coating of grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear.

    • Do not over-grease; a thin, even coat ensures smooth engagement without creating excessive hydraulic drag.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System Maintenance

The levelwind system is the most common point of failure for casting distance. If the worm shaft is sluggish, the spool must work harder to move the line guide back and forth.

  1. Worm Shaft Removal: Remove the E-clip on the non-handle side to slide out the worm shaft and the line guide carriage.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Check the plastic idler gear (the gear that links the spool to the worm shaft) for chipped teeth.

  3. Lubrication Strategy: * For these high-speed, low-load components, Deuthlon Oil is highly recommended.

    • Apply Deuthlon Oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear interface.

    • The lower viscosity of the oil compared to grease allows the levelwind to travel with minimal resistance, significantly increasing your effective casting range.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Shaft

The 1999–2009 C3 models typically feature two stainless steel ball bearings located inside the spool ends or within the side plate and tension cap.

  • Bearing Flush: Soak the bearings in a solvent to remove debris. Once dry, they should spin freely for several seconds when flicked.

  • Oiling: Apply one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each. Avoid using grease here, as it will "choke" the bearing and kill your casting performance.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Function Check

Reassemble the components in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Seat the Pinion: Ensure the pinion gear is properly seated in the yoke before closing the side plate.

  2. Alignment: When sliding the handle side plate back onto the frame, ensure the brake blocks on the spool stay retracted so they don't catch on the race.

  3. Tension Adjustment: Tighten the mechanical brake knob (tension knob) until the spool has just a tiny amount of side-to-side play (shimmy).

By utilizing grease for the heavy-duty power transmission (main/pinion) and Deuthlon Oil for the fast-moving oscillatory components (levelwind/idler), you optimize the Ambassadeur 6500C3 for both longevity and elite casting performance.
