Mechanical Restoration: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500A (Model 81-08-00)
The 81-08-00 version of the Ambassadeur 6500A is a classic specimen from the early 1980s. Characterized by its high-speed gear ratio and the transition into more refined centrifugal braking systems, this model is a workhorse that thrives on precision maintenance. Because these vintage reels feature a synchronized levelwind—meaning the line guide moves during the cast—proper lubrication is the single most important factor in preventing "distance-killing" friction.
Phase 1: Teardown and Internal Assessment
To restore the 81-08-00 to factory-spec (or better), start by isolating the three main sections: the handle side plate, the frame, and the spool.
-
Right Side Plate: Remove the three bridge screws. Lift the side plate carefully to ensure the anti-reverse dog and spring don't fly out.
-
Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. In this 1981 model, the drag washers are often original fiber; check for glazing or brittleness. Clean the drive shaft and the pinion gear yoke.
-
The Spool System: Slide the spool out. Note the two-pin brake flange on the spool. The 81-08-00 often utilizes small, white fiber brake blocks—ensure these are present and not deformed.
-
Levelwind Assembly: Remove the line carriage and the worm gear. This model uses a brass pawl that should be inspected for a sharp "hook" shape; if the tip is rounded, the levelwind will stutter.
Phase 2: Cleaning and Degreasing
Old grease from 1981 has likely turned into a thick, waxy substance.
-
Soak the main gear, pinion, and worm shaft in a degreasing agent.
-
Use a soft brush to scrub the internal teeth of the frame's idler gear.
-
Critical: Use a cotton swab to polish the brass brake race inside the side plate until it shines. Any oil or residue here will make the centrifugal brakes inconsistent.
Phase 3: Strategic Lubrication
Modern lubricants provide a significantly lower coefficient of friction than what was available when this reel was manufactured.
High-Speed Components (Oil)
The levelwind system and the idler gears are the primary sources of drag during a cast. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft and the plastic idler gear that connects the spool to the levelwind. This specific oil is designed to adhere to moving parts even under the high-RPM stress of a long cast, ensuring the synchronized movement doesn't "choke" the spool's momentum.
Load-Bearing Components (Grease)
The gear mesh handles the torque of the retrieve. Apply a specialized gear grease to the teeth of the brass main gear and the stainless steel pinion. A light, translucent coat is better than a thick layer; you want enough to cushion the metal-on-metal contact without creating "hydraulic drag" that makes the handle feel heavy.
Phase 4: Reassembly and Calibration
-
The Gear Bridge: Place the pinion gear back into the yoke. Seat the main gear onto the drive shaft, ensuring the drag washers are stacked in the correct sequence.
-
Brake Setup: Ensure the brake blocks are installed on the pins. These should remain completely dry.
-
Frame Integration: Reinsert the spool and the levelwind. Before closing the side plate, place one drop of Deuthlon oil on the spool's spindle ends or bearings.
-
Plate Alignment: Align the side plate so the pinion gear slides over the spool shaft. Tighten the three bridge screws securely but do not over-torque them.
Final Performance Check
Engage the thumb bar and spin the spool. With the Deuthlon oil on the levelwind and the fresh grease on the gears, the 81-08-00 should spin silently for several seconds. Adjust the mechanical tension knob on the handle side until the side-to-side play of the spool is just barely eliminated. Your 1981 Ambassadeur is now primed for high-performance casting with modern lines.
