Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 is a cornerstone of round-profile baitcasting reels, prized for its durability in both freshwater and light saltwater environments. To maintain its signature smooth casting and cranking power, periodic deep cleaning and strategic lubrication are essential.
Phase 1: Necessary Tools and Preparation
Before beginning the teardown, ensure you have a clean, organized workspace. You will need:
-
A 10mm wrench or nut driver.
-
A flat-head and Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
A specialized degreaser (or isopropyl alcohol).
-
Deuthlon Reel Power Oil (high-speed synthetic).
-
Marine-grade or high-viscosity gear grease.
-
Cotton swabs and a soft-bristle brush.
Phase 2: Disassembly and Deep Cleaning
-
Remove the Handle Assembly: Back off the star drag and remove the handle nut retainer screw. Use your 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut, then lift off the handle, tension spring, and star drag wheel.
-
Side Plate Access: Loosen the three thumb screws on the palm side plate. Carefully pull the right-side plate assembly away from the frame.
-
Spool and Centrifugal Brakes: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake weights on the spool shaft for any flat spots or debris.
-
The Drive Train: On the interior of the side plate, remove the main gear and the pinion gear. Take note of the drag washer stack sequence—maintaining this order is critical for consistent drag pressure.
Cleaning Pro-Tip: Submerge all metal gears and bearings in a degreaser for 15 minutes. Use a brush to scrub away old, oxidized grease from the teeth of the gears. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly.
Phase 3: Strategic Lubrication
Proper lubrication is the difference between a reel that "works" and one that performs at a professional level.
Levelwind and Idler Gears
These components are exposed to the elements and require a lubricant that reduces friction without attracting excessive grit. Apply 1–2 drops of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft (levelwind) and the plastic idler gears. This high-speed oil ensures the line guide moves effortlessly during the cast, maximizing distance.
Main and Pinion Gears
The "heart" of the reel handles the mechanical load of the retrieve. Apply a thin, even coat of high-quality grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear. Do not over-grease; a light coating that fills the gaps between the teeth is sufficient to prevent metal-on-metal wear and provide a "buttery" feel.
Phase 4: Reassembly and Testing
-
Reinstall the Gears: Seat the pinion gear back into the yoke and slide the main gear onto the drive shaft, ensuring the drag washers are seated correctly.
-
Frame Integration: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the spool shaft is clean and apply a single drop of oil to the spool bearings.
-
Closing the Plate: Reattach the right-side plate, tightening the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure even pressure.
-
Final Calibration: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Engage the freespool to check for smooth rotation and crank the handle to ensure the levelwind tracks across the spool without hesitation.
Troubleshooting Performance Issues
-
Grinding Noise: Usually indicates a dry pinion gear or a worn-out drive shaft bearing. Re-grease the gears immediately.
-
Decreased Casting Distance: Often caused by "over-oiling" the spool bearings or debris in the levelwind. Clean the worm shaft and apply a lighter oil.
-
Slipping Drag: Ensure no grease has migrated onto the drag washers. These should remain dry or be treated only with specialized drag grease.
